Note:

  • Beforetighteningthebevelboxnuts,fullyinsertthewheelspindlethroughtheswingingarmtoensureitwillrealignwiththeswingingarmwhenthewheelisinstalled.

  1. Alignthebevelboxbyfullyinsertingthewheelspindlethroughthebevelboxandswingingarmthen,intheordershownbelow,tightenallthebevelboxnutsto20Nm,thento64Nm.

Note:

  • Bevelboxtoswingingarmfixingsaretightenedintwostagesandinaspecificsequence.Tightenallfixingstothelowertorquebeforeprogressingtothehigherfigure.

Introduction

Inanenginewithanevennumberofcylinders(i.e.2,4,6etc.},apistononanupwardstrokeisalwayscounter-balancedbyoneonadescendingstroke.However,inanenginewithanoddnumberofcylinders, suchasthatfittedtotheRocketIll,thisnaturalstateofbalancedoesnotoccur.Thereforeabalancerisfittedtotheengineinordertocontrolirregular pulsescausedbytheoddnumberofcylinders.Without abalancer,theenginewould'pulse'eachtimethecrankshaftrotated.This'pulsing'wouldbefeltasavibrationwhichwouldamplifyasenginespeedincreases.

The balancerhastheeffectofapairofcounterbalanceweights,whichcreateanequalamountofenergyintheoppositedirection,andatthesametimeasthatproducedbythecrankshaft,pistonsandconnectingrods.Becausetheopposingpulsesoccuratthesamepointofcrankshaftrotation,andareofanequalmagnitude,astateofequilibriumorbalanceisreached.

Removal

  1. Removetheengineasdescribedonpage10.2.

  2. Separatethecrankcasehalvesasdescribedonpage5.5.

  3. Withthecrankcasehalvesseparated,liltoutthebalancershaftcompletewiththebearings.

  • Thebearingatthegearendcanonlyberemovedinapress.

Inspection

  1. Inspectallgearsforchippedormissingteethandforoverheating(bluediscolouration).

  2. Inspectallbearingsforsignsofoverheating(bluediscolouration),seizureandanyotherdamage.Checkthatallbearingsrotatesmoothlyandwithouttightspots.

Assembly/Installation

Note:

  • Afurtheralignmentcheckcanbemadeifrequired.Whennumberonecylinderintheengineisontop-dead-centre(TDC),slotsontheendofthebalancerwillalignwiththesplitlineofthecrankcase.Thisallowsabalancerinstallationcheckonaninstalledenginebyremovingonlytheclutchcover.

  • Balancershaftsandcrankshaftsaregraded.Ifthebalancershaftisreplaced,itmustbegrade-matchedwiththecrankshaft.Foridentification,botharemarkedadjacenttothealignmentdots(seenotebelow)either'A'or'B'.Alwaysmatchan'A'gradecrankshaftwithan'A'gradebalancershaftandvice-versa.

Note:

  • A'B'gradecomponentdoesnotindicateinferiorqualitytoan'A'gradecoponent.

Note:

  • Toensureacorrectrelationship,thebalancermustbeinstalledinaspecificorientationrelativetothecrankshaft.Therearedotmarks,oneonthebalancerdrivegear(onthecrankshaft)andoneonthebalancerdrivengear,whichmustbeinalignmentwhenthebalancershaftisfitted.
