Camshafts

Note:

• Eithercamshaftcanberemovedfromthecylinderheadwithoutcompleteremovalofthecamchain.However,thecamchainmustfirstbedetachedfromthecamshafts.

1. Removethecamcover(seepage3.5).

Note:

• Turntheengineuntilthemaximumnumberof camlobesarefacingawayfromthevalves.Thiswillpreventthecamsfromspringingaroundwhenthecamchaintensionerisremoved.

2. Removethecamchaintensioner(seepage3.6).

3. Removethecamchaintoppad.

4.Progressivelyandevenlyreleasetheremainingcamladderfixings,halfaturneach,untiltheupward pressureontheboltheadshasbeenreleased.Alwaysstartfromthecentreoftheengine.

Camshaftidentification

Theinletcamshaftcanbeidentifiedbyagrooveonamachinedsurfaceinits centre.The samesurfaceontheexhaustcamisplain.

5. Oncealltheupwardforce onthecamladderhasbeenprogressivelyreleased,collectalltheboltsandremovetheladder.

6. Securethecamchaintopreventitfromfallingintothefrontoftheengine.

Note:

• Thesoundsuppressionboltwillpreventthecamchainfromfallingcompletelyawayfromthehead.

Liftthecamchainfromoneofthecamshaftstoallow removaloftheshaftfromthecylinderhead.

Camsprocketorientation

Thesamedrivesprocketisusedforbothinletandexhaustcams.

Toattachthesprocketinthecorrectrelationshiptothecams,twopairsofoffset boltholesareused,withinletandexhaustboltholesbeingclearlymarked('IN'forinletand'EX'forexhaust).Theholeswillalsopreventthesprocketsfrombeingfitted180°outofalignment.

Tofitasprockettoaninletcam,positionthesprockettothecamandaligntheholemarked'IN'withoneofthethreadedholesinthecamshaft.Ifbothbolt-holesinthecamlineupcorrectlywiththeholesinthesprocket,thesprocketisinthecorrectplace.Iftheholesdonotlineup,thenthesprocketshouldberotatedbyahalf-turn.

7. Finger-tightenthecamladderboltsuntiltheunder-headareasareincontactwiththecamladder.

8. Inthesequenceshownbelowevenlyandprogressivelytightenthecamladder bolts,approximatelyhalf aturneach,untilthecamladderisinfullcontactwiththehead.

Inspection

1. Inspectthesprocketsfordamageandwornorbrokenteeth.

2. Inspectthebearingsurfacesinthecylinderheadandcamladder.Ifwearordamageisfound,thecylinderheadmustbereplaced.

3. Inspectthecamchain(seepage3.7).

4. CheckcamshaftjournaltocamladderclearanceusingPlastigage(Triumphpartnumber3880150-T0301)asfollows:

1. Positionacamshaft tothecylinderhead init'scorrectlocation,(inletcamtoinletvalves,exhaust camtoexhaustvalves).Ensurethatthetimingmarksonthecamsprocketarepositionedasforremoval.

2. Releaseandremovethecamladderaspreviouslydescribed.Wipetheexposedareasofoneofthecamshaftjournalsandthecorrespondingpositiononthecamladder.

3. Applyathinsmearofgrease tothewipedcamshaftjournalandasmallquantityofsiliconereleaseagenttothecorrespondingpositiononthecamladder.

4. SizeapieceofPlastigagetofitacrossthewipedcamshaftjournal.

5. FitthePlastigagetothecamshaftjournalusingthegreasetoholditinplace.

f)Positionthecamladdertothecylinderhead,aligningbearingareaswithcamjournals.Atthisstage,itisnotnecessarytofitthecamchaintoppad.

5. Ifthejournaltocamladderclearanceiswithinthespecifiedtolerances(seetablebelow),removethecamladderandcleanoffalltracesofPlastigage,siliconereleaseagentandgrease.

8.Ifanyofthejournaltocamladderclearancesareoutsidethespecifiedtolerances,butthecamshaftjournalsarewithintheirspecifiedtolerances,thecylinderheadmust bereplaced.
