2. Write a small essay “Education in my school”

3. The system of education in the usa

In the United States the education system differs from state to state. In each school the principal, i.e. the headmaster, draws up curriculum for each grade. There are many different kinds of schooling: public schools, private schools, parochial schools, schools specializing in the aits, literature or sciencc, etc. All American children aged 6 to 18 years (or 16 in some states) get free compulsory education. The most common system of education comprises: nursery school from 3 to 4 years; kindergarten (4—6 years); elementary school (6—12 years; Is1—6th grades); junior high school (12— 15 years; 7th—9th grades); senior high school (15—18 years; 10*— 12,h grades).

In public schools the curriculum varies in each state, for instance the subjects New York State requires in the 7th and 8th grades are: English; social studies (histoiy, geography, economics); science; maths; technical education; home and career skills; art and music; library skills; physical education (three times a week); health; foreign language. A typical school day starts at 8.30 or 9.00 a.m. and ends at about 3.30 p.m. In many schools a day still begins with a salute to the American flag. Lessons are normally held five days a week, from Monday to Friday.

In most American schools television is widely used in teaching and there are television channels which offer a wide range of new educational shows. They are free, most do not have commercials and some provide teachers' guides. The American magazine Newsweek has called a television set "the second blackboard" and "the teaching tube". Many states are encouraging the use of television in class. Some, like Virginia and South Carolina, produce their instructional shows and deliver them via satellite.

EDUCATION IN GREAT BRITAIN

In England and Wales compulsory school begins at the age of five, but before lliat age children can go to a nursery school, also called play school. School is compulsory till children are 16 years old. There are two systems of state school, depending on the county:

System A: Primary School from 5 to 11; Secondary School from 11 to 16/18. Primary school is usually divided into two sections: infant school (ages 5—7) and junior school (ages 7—11).

System B: First School from 5 to 8; Middle School from 8 to 13; Secondary School from 13 to 16—18.

In Primary School and First School children learn to read and write and the basics of arithmetic. In the higher classes of Primary School (or in Middle School) children learn geography, history, religion and, in some schools, also a foreign language. Physical education is usually done twice a week. Outside the normal time-table there are many activities in which students may take part: sports, drama, table tennis and so on. Secondary Schools can be divided into: Grammar, Secondary Modern and Comprehensive, according to the system adopted by the local education authority. The majority attend comprehensives which incorporate all schoolchildren into one scheme. The children are, therefore, of mixed abilities and may come from a wide variety of social backgrounds.

Some critics of this system argue that bright academic, children suffer and that average standards are low. When students are 16 years old, they may take an exam in various subjects in order to have a qualification. These qualifications can be either G.C.S.E. (General Certificate of Secondary Education) or "0 level" (Ordinary level). Students can choose any number of subjects in their curriculum; some may take six or seven G.C.S.E.s, some only two. After sitting their "0 levels" or G.C.S.E.s students can either leave school and start working or continue their studies in the same school as before. If they continue, when they are eighteen, they have to take further examinations, called "A levels" (Advanced or Academic levels), normally two or three, which are necessary for getting into university or college.

Some parents choose independent schools for their children. These are very expensive but considered to provide a better education and good job opportunities. The stages of education in independent schools are called in a different way: children from 5 to 8 attend a preparatoiy school; between the ages of 8 and 13 they go to a preparatory (or prep) school; from 13 to 18 they attend a public school, but only if they pass an examination called "Common Entrance". The oldest and most exclusive Public Schools are Eton College, founded in 1440, Harrow, founded in 1571, and Rugby, founded in 1567.
