Conditionals

Союзы: if- если; unless - если не; provided - при условии, что; in case - в

случае, если.

Patterns:

1. If I see him tomorrow, I'll show him your new article. -Если я увижу его завтра, я покажу ему вашу новую статью.

2. If I saw him tomorrow, I should show him your new article. - Если бы я увидел его завтра, я бы показал ему вашу новую статью.

3. If I had seen him yesterday, I should have shown him your new article. - Если бы я увидел его вчера, я бы показал ему вашу новую статью.

Exercise I. Translate into Russian:

1. If the actor does not act like the character she or he is supposed to be, you may be disappointed.

2. Unless a government is safe, and unless it has some control over the members of the society, government cannot protect the people it represents.

3. If you break such a norm, you may be punished severely or even sent out of the society.

4. If a temperature increase were to happen now, floods caused by the melting of the polar ice caps would submerge thousands of miles of low-lying coastline.

5. Were Taiwan and Korea to be followed by the larger states of Southeast Asia, that would blur, the North-South divide and make international economic alignments.

5. Had he time, he might complete the work sooner.

7. The weather would be wonderful, were it not so hot.

Exercise 2. Put the verb in brackets into the correct form:

1. She won't tell you anything unless you (ask) her.

2. I'll cut a few sandwiches in case we (get) hungry.

3. They did not realize that no changes would ever take place, unless they themselves (do) something about it.

4. I only knew that if he (object) I (give up) the plan.

5. If you have read these two letters attentively, you should (notice) several stylistic features.

6. If you transfer a call from another extension, you (give) a caller's name.

7. You should better go to your room at once, if you (be tired).

8. I would be a lot happier, if I still (have) nothing except my freedom.

9. If I went to Kiev, I (go) sightseeing.

10. It wouldn't have happened if you (be) more careful.

Exercise 3. Translate into English:

1. He уходите, если я с ней не поговорю.

2. Если они приедут завтра, мы пойдем на выставку в музей.

3. Я понимал, что если я не прочту статью, то обсуждение ее будет для меня бесполезным.

4. Если вы не возражаете, я отправлю факс завтра.

5. Я бы отправила факс завтра, если бы менеджер подписал его сегодня.

6. Если вы так нервничаете, то почему не позвонили заказчику сами?

7. Если бы товары всегда доставляли вовремя, мы бы не имели проблем такого рода.

8. Договор будет заключен при условии, что продавец сделает скидку на товар.

9. Если бы оптовики не скупили весь товар, цены не упали бы так резко.

10. Даже если вас не видела Флори, кто-нибудь другой мог заметить вас.

11. Если мне придется, я не поленюсь допросить все население этого города.
