1 - How many exams do you have this term?

- Three. And you?

- I was not permitted to enter for my exams.

- Why?

- I hadn’t got through my credit test. The questions were rather tough.

2 - Have you got through the history exam?

- Yes, I passed it with flying colours. What about you?

- I’m not quite good at history and I only managed to scrape through

the exam.

3 - I say, you look overworked to me.

- You’ve hit on the truth. I’m terribly overworked and feel poorly.

- It comes of sitting up late. You don’t sleep much.

- That’s right. The first thing I’ll have to do is to catch up on my sleep.

  1. Complete the sentences below with a suitable phrasal verb. Advice on doing exams

Many people don’t _____ their exams or only manage to _______ them with a very low grade because they make two simple mistakes: they often choose the wrong questions to answer and they don’t plan their essays in sufficient detail. So here is some advice.

  1. When you get your exam paper, _______all the questions before you choose which ones you want to answer.

  2. When you have done this, _______on a spare piece of paper any relevant ideas that come to mind.

  3. Next, ________ what you want to say in your essay before you begin writing.

  4. Make a plan and then start your essay.

Talk to your partner and ask for advice. You can decide to accept the advice that he or she gives:Yes, that’s a good idea. Or you can reject it: That’s easier said than done.

Rolecard B

Your partner is going to tell you about his or her problems with studying. Give as much helpful advice as you can. When giving advice, you can say:

  1. Write a letter replying to the one in Ex. 4. Give George advice about his study problems. Remember to sound encouraging!
