  1. A. Read the interview with Angela and role play it.

I: How important is it for you to get on in life?

A: Extremely important. My father used to say “You must make something

in your life.”

I: Why did start working as a secretary then?

A: I just wanted to get some experience?

I: Where did you work?

A: It was a small, badly-run company and when I went there they said the job

wasn’t difficult and I would soon pick up.

I: Was it really so?

A: Well, at the beginning I liked the job, but as time passed I found I was

working late in the evenings and even at weekends.

I: What about the salary. Was it good?

A: No, I earned just enough to get by. And in addition, there were no

promotion prospects.

I: Was it the main reason for your quitting?

A: Not exactly. I didn’t get on well with my boss. One day I asked him for

some time off to visit my sick mother but he refused point-blank. And that

was the last straw. The next day I handed in my resignation.

I: What did you do after that?

A: I decided to return to studies and go in for law. Now I’m starting to make

my way in the world.

I: I wish you good luck and every success.

A: Thank you. My father used to say “The world is your oyster.” And I think

he’s right.

b. Make a similar interview with Jeremy.

  1. Role play the following dialogue.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed

Kate is a teacher of English. She wants her friend Sally to teach English at her school, but Sally refuses point-blank.

  • I’m just wondering if you’ll appreciate my offer. I want you to be a teacher of English at our school.

  • It’s a wonderful opportunity, Kate. But the problem is that I’m an interpreter, not a teacher.

  • I understand, Sally. If you consider my offer to be a wonderful opportunity you should accept it. Don’t you think so?

  • The matter is I enjoy being an interpreter. I’ve been working as an interpreter for about six years now. I’d like to keep it up.

  • You refuse point-blank, don’t you?

  • Yes, I do. Are you cross with me?

  • Not in the least. I’m committed to my job, too. I would never change it for anything else.

  • Is your salary high?

  • I just get enough to get by but it is not the matter of salary. I love children. I’m happy being a teacher.

  • You must be a very good teacher. You know the language perfectly well and you’re a committed teacher.

  • I’m flattered. I invite you to my lesson, Sally.

  • Thank you. I’ll be delighted to attend your lesson.

  • Tomorrow I’ll pick you up at a quarter to nine and take you to my school. OK?

  • It’s a deal.

  • You’ll be able to hear my pupils speak English. You’ll talk with them.

  • I suppose they speak English nicely, don’t they?

  • Well, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for them.
