HYDROGEN
Hydrogen was obtained in the sixteenth century by the action of sulphuric acid on iron. Boyle, at the end of the seventeenth century, proved that, unlike air, the gas was inflammable. Lavoisier suggested the name hydrogen (water producer) in 1783, because when the gas burned in air water was formed. In 1766–81, Henry Cavendish was the first to recognize that hydrogen gas was a discrete substance, and that it produces water when burned, the property for which it was later named: in Greek, hydrogen means "water-former".
Hydrogen is used commercially in the oxy-hydrogen blowpipe, for filling balloons where helium is not available, and in the processes for manufacturing ammonia. Industrial production is mainly from steam reforming natural gas, and less often from more energy-intensive methods such as the electrolysis of water. Most hydrogen is used near the site of its production site, the two largest uses being fossil fuel processing (e.g., hydro cracking) and ammonia production, mostly for the fertilizer market. Hydrogen is a concern in metallurgy as it can embitter many metals, complicating the design of pipelines and storage tanks. It is also used in the hardening of oils. Hydrogen is passed through oils which contain unsaturated carbon compounds, containing nickel as a catalyst, and some hydrogen unites with the unsaturated compound to form a saturated compound of higher melting-point than the original oil, so that the product is a solid and not a liquid.
2. Answer the questions (ответьте на вопросы) 1. When and by whom was hydrogen discovered? 2. How is hydrogen obtained in industry? 3. What does the name of hydrogen mean?
3. Find equivalents in the text (найдите в тексте эквиваленты): был получен воздействием серной кислоты на железо; для заполнения воздушных шаров, когда гелий недоступен; пропускается через масла; промышленное производство; в процессе производства аммиака.

NITROGEN
Nitrogen is a common element in the universe, estimated at about seventh in total abundance in the Milky Way and the Solar System. On Earth, the element forms about 78% of Earth's atmosphere and is the most abundant uncombined element. The element nitrogen was discovered as a separable component of air by Scottish physician Daniel Rutherford in 1772.
Nitrogen occurs in all organisms, primarily in amino acids (and thus proteins), in the nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and in the energy transfer molecule adenosine triphosphate. The human body contains about 3% by mass of nitrogen, the fourth most abundant element in the body after oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. The nitrogen cycle describes movement of the element from the air, into the biosphere and organic compounds, then back into the atmosphere.
Many industrially important compounds, such as ammonia, nitric acid, organic nitrates (propellants and explosives), and cyanides, contain nitrogen. Synthetically produced ammonia and nitrates are key industrial fertilizers, and fertilizer nitrates are key pollutants in the eutrophication of water systems.
Nitrogen is a constituent of every major pharmacological drug class, including antibiotics. Many drugs are mimics or prodrugs of natural nitrogen-containing signal molecules: for example, the organic nitrates nitroglycerin and nitroprusside control blood pressure by metabolizing into nitric oxide.
2. Answer the following questions (ответьте на следующие вопросы): 1.When and by whom was nitrogen discovered? 2. How is nitrogen obtained in industry? 3. What forms does nitrogen exist in?
3. Translate words and combination of words into English (переведите слова и выражения на английский язык): присутствует во всех организмах, многие важные промышленные соединения, органические соединения, удобрения, огромный класс фармакологических лекарств, цикл, самый распространенный элемент.
