THE DEVELOPMENT OF RUBBER

The natural rubber is soft and wax like when warm, so that it is possible to give it any form. The Peruvians made the discovery that it was very good for keeping out the wet. Then in the early part of the eighteenth century, the Americans made use of it for the first time. First they made overshoes to keep their feet dry. Then came a certain Mr. Mackintosh, who made coats of cloth covered with natural rubber. From that day to this our raincoats are still named after him.

The natural rubber is sticky in summer, and hard and inelastic in the winter when it was cold. But the rubber we have today is not sticky, but soft and elastic, though very strong even in the warmest summer and the coldest winter.

First came the discovery that nitric acid (HN03) made the rubber much better. Then came the idea that rubber could be made hard and strong if mixed with sulphur (S) and put in the sun. Now it is common knowledge that the way to make rubber hard and strong — to “vulcanize” it, as we say —is by heating it with sulphur.

OXYGEN

Oxygen is the most abundant of the 104 elements. It forms one- fifth, by volume, of the air; eight-ninths of the weight of water; and one-half of the total weight of all rocks. This is an important part of the atmosphere. Additionally, as oxides the element also makes up almost half of the Earth's crust.

Oxygen was discovered in 1774 by Joseph Priestley who obtained it by heating mercuric oxide—a method no longer used because of its expense and its low yield.

Oxygen is denser than air and slightly soluble in water. (About 3 ml oxygen dissolves in 100 ml water under room conditions.) Upon this slight solubility depends the breathing of all aquatic life.

The main uses of oxygen depend upon its ability to support life through respiration. In in­dustry oxygen is obtained by the fractional distillation of liquid air. Oxygen is used to enrich the air blast during the production of iron from ore in blast furnace and the con­version of iron into steel. This produces a higher furnace temperature, an increased yield of iron and steel, and a purer product. Burning ap­paratus fed with oxygen and acetylene will give a flame with a tem­perature of about 3,000 °C. It is used in engineering for cutting steel and for welding metal sections together.
