Mass Printing
The beginning of mass printing in Ukraine is associated with the name of the Russian printer Ivan Fedorov. He was considered the first to establish a printing house in Moscow, but later he left Russia and moved to Lviv, where in 1573 he organized another printing house. During 1573-1574 he printed the book “Apostel” in Church Slavonic language. Along with the printing Fedorov also held educational activities. He prepared and printed “learning books, grammars”. A good example of Fedorov’s work was “Primer” published in 1574. It was the first East Slavic printed primer for people.
Being invited by the Prince Konstiantyn Ostroz’kyi Fedorov moved to Ostrog, where the famous Ostrog School was functioning. In 1580 Fedorov published “New Testament” in Ostrog. This book was the first-born sample of Ukrainian bibliography and science.
However, the crown of printing skills of Fedorov was “Ostrog Bible” (1581). It was the first edition of the complete Bible Church Slavonic text books in the East and South Slavic nations.
On the Left Bank of Ukraine printing was introduced by Archbishop Lazar Baranovich. In 1675 in Novgorod-Seversky he organised printing house, which was transferred to the Chernigiv in 1679.
