How to avoid freshman 15

Freshman 15 is an expression meaning15 pounds of weight that freshmen gain during the first year at university. At this age young people stop growing and switch to adult metabolism. Other common causes are stress, freedom to eat whatever whenever, unhealthy eating habits, busy schedules, overeating and partying. How can you avoid weight gain? Well, here are the tips.

Don't skip breakfast!

If you don't have breakfast you will feel hungrier during the day. This leads to overeating. Besides, breakfast boosts your blood sugar which stimulates your brain activity and helps remember things better.

Have healthy snacks around!

Keep foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, granola bars, trail mixes, etc in your bag. This will keep you away from fast foods and campus snack bars and help save money too.

Include at least three food groups in every meal.

When choosing from the dining hall menu, try to get fresh fruits and veggies, lean protein, and calcium — not just pizza and chicken fingers. And the more color on your plate, the better.

Give it 20 minutes.

If you eat your meal or snack quickly, you’ll go back to the kitchen to get more food. That’s because it takes about 20 minutes for your brain and stomach to realize that you’re full. Those who eat slower get less calories and more water. So, try to schedule your meal time around 20 to 30 minutes, or eat with your non-dominant hand to slow you down.

Drink water!

Water is necessary for your body to process calories. Carry a bottle of water with you throughout your class schedule. Drinking water makes you feel fuller. Drinking a full glass of water before eating a meal or snack and prevents you from overeating.
