HOW TO MANAGE UNIVERSITY STRESS

  • Think positive!

Try to see the positive sides of your new life. Be optimistic and calm. Don't let negative emotions set in your mind. The way you think shapes the way you feel. You may feel homesick or tired of you university life, this is natural. Just wait and things will get better. Try to be happy with what you have and say thank you for it.

Over to you: Think of five things you can thank your life for.

  • Eat healthy balanced meals!

Eat light, low-fat, high-protein meals, such as low fat cottage cheese, grilled chicken or fish with a baked potato and green salad. Cut down on coffee, tea, fizzy drinks and cocoa. Drink water, herbal teas and fresh fruit juices instead. Water is essential in managing stress. Choose foods such as pasta, potatoes or rice for your evening meal, as these help the body to produce cortisol the anti-stress hormone. Eating green vegetables and lots of fruit is really important. Juices filled with vitamin C, such as orange or grapefruit juice, are good for your immune system so can help with stress. Cooking can be a relaxing activity too.

Over to you: Which of the foods mentioned above really help you feel better? What are your anti-stress foods? What about water and other drinks? Do you find cooking relaxing?

  • Get plenty of sleep!

From 7 to 9 hours. No all-nighters! The same schedule every night. Remember that between10 and12 pm is the time for beauty sleep. Sleep is always the best medicine and can help you work more effectively and thus feel better about yourself. As students we spend too much time on social media sites and answering emails, texts and phone calls. Social life is fun – but too much of it, and too much computer time, instead of sleeping, can lead to more stress.

  • Do your hobbies or exercise.

Listen to music, it's a great anti-stressor. You may even put on some quiet music while you work. Handwork is a great thing too. It helps you relax and feel better. Doing sport at least once a week is the best way to reduce stress. It helps your body produce endorphins, which make you feel good. 30 minutes of walking can reduce stress levels but it's even better to work out. Joining a sports club could also help with stress as the regular contact with other people makes you feel good. And why not try yoga? It's a great way to ease your mind and relax your muscles.

Over to you: What activities help you reduce stress? Do you do your assignments to music? Do you put on music as you do housework? How about sports? Do you exercise a lot?

  • Socialize and laugh!

Make as many friends as possible. University friends are friends forever. Besides, you have a chance to make important contacts which may be useful in your professional work later in life. Also, keep in touch with your family! Just talking to the people who love you makes you feel happy, relaxed and confident. Laugh and smile! It's the best medicine for stress.

Over to you: Do you already have friends at university? What do you talk about with them? How often do you talk to your parents? What do they usually ask you about? Do you usually laugh in class or during breaks?
