  1. Five things

  • Name five objects that you can associate student life with.

  • What five objects from the list above might be good birthday gifts?

  • What five things were not used by your great-grandmother?

  • What five things do you buy most often?

  • What five things are absolutely essential for you?

  1. What is this? a guessing game

Variant 1:

Think of one object you pack for university. Describe it and say what you use it for. Have the other students guess what you mean.

e.g. They are different colours. We use them to collect and take out garbage.

Variant 2:

Think of one object you pack for university.

The other students will ask you YES/NO questions to find out what it is.

e.g. Do we use it in the kitchen?

Do we have it in our bags?

Do boys use it?

  1. Everyday problems

    1. What is the problem? Match the beginnings to the endings.

  • How did you break that

mug?

  • Yes, we have run out of biscuits and candies.

  • The floor is sticky!

  • I walked through a low doorway and bumped my head on it.

  • It's so cold in here!

  • Oh, no. You just need some stain remover, that's all.

  • There is nothing to tea.

  • There is a power cut.

  • Will you be in after 5?

  • Yes, why?

  • That's because the battery is dead.

  • God, my shirt is ruined!

  • Yes, it is. The heating is off.

  • The lights are not working.

  • Yes, sorry, I spilt my juice on it. It probably needs some more washing.

  • Where is this bruise from?

  • I have mislaid my keys and I don't have time to look for them. So I won't be able to get in when I come.

  • I can't switch on the TV with the remote control.

  • I just dropped it.

  • The sink is blocked.

  • Somebody has been throwing tea-leaves in there again!

    1. Think-pair-share the following questions:

- What things do you usually mislay?

- What do you do when there is a power cut? Do you use your flashlight to go on with your work or do you go to bed?

- What things do you run out of very quickly?

- How do you make yourself warm when the heating is off and it's still cold outside?

UNIT 5

HOW TO MANAGE UNIVERSITY STRESS

LEAD-IN

  1. The university stressors

      1. What are the university stressors for these people? How are their experiences and feeling close to yours? Are there any other things that make you feel bad?

  1. poor living conditions

  2. being away from home

  3. academic demands and exam pressure

  4. new situation

  5. competition

  6. new relationships

  7. poor time management

    1. It's nothing like high school! You've got double periods instead of one class, I don't know how to get around this huge place, I can't remember all the new names…

    2. That's something really hard. No shower, no hot water, queuing to use the cooker. Sometimes the heating is off! And you can't use your heater…

    3. I was one of the best pupils at school. Now there are many students like me. I have to pull all-nighters all the time to cope with all the work…

    4. I do miss my people, I even sprayed my Mom's perfume around my room and hanged up my family pictures to feel closer to them…

    5. I can't really organize my day in the right way – I spend too much time on social media, it's just a problem to get started sometimes, in the end I pull an all-nighter and feel totally stressed-out in the morning.

    6. You really have to work hard every day, sometimes every night. It's not only about not falling behind, it's about passing your exams. You can't help thinking about it all the time.

    7. Making new friends is not that easy. It takes time to get to know the people around. They are all so different…

      1. How do you feel about these university stressors? You may start like this:
