III. Comment on the following quotations:

  • In our disillusionment after the last war, we gave up the hope of achieving a better peace because we had not the courage to fulfil our responsibilities in an admittedly imperfect world (Roosevelt)

  • We are share responsibility for each other’s security (Kofi Annan)

  • We must make sure that the United Nations’ work is fruitful, that it is a reality and not a sham, that it is a force for action, and not merely a frothing of words, that it is a true temple of peace in which the shield of many nations can some day be hung up, and not merely a cockpit in a Tower of Babel (Winston Churchill)

IV. Suggested activities for students:

  1. Which of the discussed priorities you would consider the most acute one? Why? Give your arguments and discuss them with other students.

  2. What are the main threats to the UN? Do you see any new threats and challenges? What are they?

  3. The topics given in the article were reflecting the agenda of 2008. Has anything changed since that? Were there any positive shifts? Has the importance of the UN strengthened? Why or why not?

  4. The unit presents the views of Kofi Annan, the former Secretary-general of the UN and Ban Ki-moon, the current Secretary-general. Choose any aspect of activity trace it back and analyze their stances on the matter. Is it possible to fine some common grounds in their position? Whose arguments, reasons and actions seem more persuasive for you?

  5. In one of his interviews Boutros Ghali says that it takes time to come to consensus. But our modern culture demands all and at once. We are not familiar with such a notion as to give time to the time itself. We need immediate results and can’t wait. Probably here lies the problem of reforming the UN. May be more time is needed to create an organization that will work efficiently and meet all the expectations. Would you agree with such a viewpoint?

  6. Examine your country's interest in UN reform. Countries' positions on various issues are available on the UN web site. From there, contact your country's permanent mission to the United Nations. Go to www.un.org/Overview/unmember.html for information. How do you feel about your country's policy? Share your opinions with your elected officials.

  7. Write an essay on the topic: “The United Nations: can its credibility be repaired?”
