IV. Suggested activities for students:

  1. In 2004 ten countries joined the EU. Choose one of them and prepare a brief report. What were the necessary preconditions for admitting the country? Did it manage to meet all the demands? What was done to meet them? How did life of common people of the country change after it joined the EU?

  2. Turkey is the country that seeks to join the EU since the end of the 1950s. Since that time its prospects at one moment were high at another seemed to amount to nothing. Trace the development of relations between Turkey and the EU. What are the main difficulties on the path to its joining? Did the country make attempts to meet the demands of the EU? What was done and what is still to be done? What are the chances of Turkey to become the EU member? What makes you think so?

  3. What are the relations between the EU and Russia? Should this country apply for joining the EU? What are the possible consequences of its joining? Is Europe eager to see Russia as its member?

  4. You have been asked to advise on further development of the EU. Should it continue to enlarge or should it focus attention on the process of integration within the bloc? What arguments would you present?

  5. You are to take part in a debate devoted to a country’s joining the EU. Divide into two groups and be ready to give arguments for and against. Use statistics, research public opinion, analyze possible positive impact and negative consequences of the country’s joining. How will appearance of one more member-state tell on the EU?

  6. Write an essay on the topic: “The future of the EU”.
