IV. Suggested activities for students:

  1. Do you share the idea that major powers have a particular respon­sibility to maintain peace? Is there any danger in their assuming this responsibility? Defend your answer.

  2. Why do you think that the number of IGOs and NGOs has grown so dramatically during this century? Support your position with specific examples. What predictions would you make about the continued growth of IGOs and NGOs in the twenty-first century? What evidence sup­ports your position?

  3. Some observers have compared the inability of contemporary nation-states to solve the problems facing humanity with the inability of European feudalism to deal with the social, political, and economic forces unleashed prior to the collapse of feudalism. Do you agree with this comparison? Why, or why not?

  4. Nowadays much is said about the adequacy of nation-state-centric approaches to politics in a world which is undergoing rapid and far-reaching political change. It is a world which is characterized by a variety of international regimes and organizations; a world increasingly subject to what some might call “global governance”. Thus a question emerges: is the nation-state still of primary importance to the practice and the study of politics, or is politics “above” the nation-state becoming more important?

  5. Should IGOs and NGOs seek to influence symptoms or causes, program design or underlying ideology?

  6. Which issues and targets would you consider most important for influencing by IGOs and NGOs?

  7. To what major international organizations does your government belong? What are the powers of these international organizations? Is membership of these institutions a matter of domestic political debate? If so, what are the parameters of that debate?

  8. Has your government been an active sponsor of international collaboration of any sort? If so, what are the arguments used by leading politicians to justify such activity?
