Although teachers have a curriculum to follow, the ability to decide on what is taught on a daily basis and how this is taught is up to the teacher. Teaching allows you to be creative, not only as a teacher, but as an individual, using your knowledge and personality in new and exciting ways. An Interview With A Trainee
School
My current placement for this half-term is at Whoberley Hall Primary School in Coventry. It is a small school with around 180 pupils in total and it holds a Good Ofsted rating.
Role
I am based in Year 6 and this half-term I will be teaching a mixture of English, Maths and Science.
What is it about your subject that you love teaching?
For primary, we teach a bit of everything. I love this because it makes each day really interesting as we never get stuck teaching the same subject for hours on end. I think it's important to young people to have this all round knowledge at primary level, not only in order to prepare them for secondary school but also to experience different subject areas and begin to think about what interests them and what they are passionate about.
What is it about the age group that you teach that you enjoy?
One thing that I'm really enjoying about working with Year 6 is that they ask such great questions. My class is full of curious minds, which makes them brilliant to teach as they always want to know more.
What is the best reason to go into teaching?
I think the best reason to go into teaching is to make a positive impact in children's lives. Teaching is an excellent profession as you can help children both academically and pastorally, so a personal desire to be able to push children to reach their potential and grow as individuals is a great attitude to have.
How well does your pgce training prepare you for teaching?
For the first half-term of the course, we were based at University for the majority of the time. This really helped to ensure that we became more secure and confident in our subject knowledge and our appreciation of the theory behind teaching strategies before we were let loose into teaching our own classes. The support from the University staff, as well as from our personal tutors has been really beneficial in preparing us for our placements and making us feel more confident as teachers.
What is the best advice you can give to a new trainee to get through their first year?
Don't expect too much of yourself! No-one is expecting you to be perfect straight away and when you first start teaching, not every lesson you plan will be completely fantastic and inspirational. The PGCE year is all about learning how to improve and become the best teacher you can be for your pupils. So just keep on trying your very best and take all feedback on board.
