THE EFFECTS OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT

When we talk about your environment, we are talking about everything around you – the place where you live, the things that happen there, the climate, the people, and the feelings and actions of those people. These are all things that affect your own growth and development, sometimes even in ways that go against the basic plan set by your heredity. For example, if you cannot get the right kind of food from your environment you may not become as tall or as strong as your genes had you programmed for.

The effect that your environment has on you is a lifelong process. Every day you have new experiences that are not exactly like anyone else's experiences. Each of these experiences has the same effect on you that a blow of the sculptor's chisel has on a piece of marble. Each blow of the chisel affects the final shape of the sculpture, just as each of your experiences shapes you. Another way to describe the effect your experiences have on you is to say that each experience teaches you a lesson about how to grow. To understand this point better, let's look at the seven main places where you get these lessons for growing.
