All you have to do to convince yourself that you really are unique is to look at the people around you. Look at your own brothers and sisters, if you have any, and at your classmates and friends. None of these people looks exactly like you. None of them talks, moves, thinks, acts, or reacts exactly as you do either. The process of conception and birth is the same for all human beings, so why are people so different from each other? Psychologists, scientists who study the mind and human behavior, explain the differences in people by talking about two factors: heredity and environment. In this part, you will learn what these words mean and see how they influence your development. You will also be able to think about the very important question of whether you have any control over your own development.

YOUR HEREDITY: THE BASIC PLAN

When we speak of your heredity, we are talking about all the characteristics that have been passed down to you not only from your mother and father but from generations back. Your heredity is responsible for such physical characteristics as your sex, the color of your hair, skin, and eyes, and your general size and shape. Heredity also provides the broad outlines for your emotional and mental makeup, setting out in a very general way what kind of person you will be.

All the special characteristics that you inherit from your ancestors are carried in "genes," which can be compared to tiny computers. To make a computer work, someone has to make a basic plan, or program, for it that tells it exactly how to proceed. When you were conceived, your genes were programmed in this same way, so that they would contain the basic plan for your development. A computer's program also tells it when to take each step. Likewise, your genes were given a timetable for your growth-a built-in schedule for when you would be strong enough to walk, when your first and second sets of teeth would grow in, when you would become an adult physically, and so on. To understand why your program is different from everyone else's, you have to realize that there are many different kinds of genes and they can be combined in any number of ways. The particular combination of genes that you have is yours alone, and so no one else can have the particular combination of genetic qualities that you do.

Питання до підмета будується за наступною схемою:
