Justasthemechanicalreapertransformedtheeconomicsofcerealfarming,anewwaveofagriculturalautomationpromisestodothesameinotherareasofhorticulture.Becausepickingapplesisverydifferenttopluckingstrawberries,themachinesaretakingvariousforms.Somehavegiantmechanicalarmsandaretowedbehindtractorsthroughorchardsandvineyards.Somearefullyautonomousandabletoscurryaroundontheirown,eveninpaddyfields,liketheroboticrice-planterdevelopedbyJapan’sNationalAgriculturalResearchCentre.Otherstrundleaboutinsideexperimentalgreenhouses.
