Oildoesnotjustprovidethefuelthatpowerstheinternal-combustionenginesincars.Itsby-productsarealsothebasisofmanyofthematerials,suchasplastics,fromwhichcarsaremade.Oneofthesepetroleumby-productsisisoprene.Thisisusedtomakethesyntheticrubberincartyres.Aboutabilliontyresaremadeeveryyear-eachonerequiringabout26litresofoil.Nowawayhasbeenfoundtomakegreenertyresbyusinggeneticallymodifiedbugstoproduceisoprenebiologically.
TheworkisbeingcarriedoutbyGenencor,anindustrialbiotechcompanybasedinCalifornia,incollaborationwithGoodyear,oneoftheworld’sbiggesttyremakers.InthelaboratoryGenencorhasproducedenoughofwhatitcallsBioIsopreneforGoodyeartobuildandsuccessfullytestprototypetyresmadewith
thenewmaterial.Genencorisnowcompletingadedicatedpilotfactorywhichwillbeusedtodevelopamass-productionprocess,whichcouldbeoperatingcommerciallyaround2015.
Isopreneisamonomer,whichisasubstancewhosemoleculescanbelinkedtogetherchemicallytoformapolymer.Latex,amaterialobtainedfromrubbertrees,isanaturalpolymerofisoprene.Isoprenecanalsobeartificiallypolymerisedtomakesyntheticrubber.Tyresaremadeofacombinationofnaturalandsyntheticrubbertoprovidethegripandendurancerequiredbycarmakers.Typicallyaroundaquarterofeachtyreismadefromisoprenederivedfrompetrochemicals,andabout60%ofworldwideisopreneproductionisusedbytyremakers.Therestgoesintomakingotherproducts,includingglues,disposablenappiesandsurgicalgloves.
GenencorusedageneticallymodifiedformofE-coli,afavouritespeciesofbacteriainmicrobialgenetics,toproduceBioIsoprene.Bysplicingingenesfromotherbugs,thecompanywasabletoengineersyntheticmetabolicpathways-onesthatdonotexistinnature-thatenablethebacteriatoproduceisoprenefromthesugarsfoundinplantmaterialssuchassugarcane,corncobsandswitchgrass.
