GRAMMAR COMMENT: Articles and determiners
-
Use indefinite article a / an
• to refer to large whole numbers, fractions, weights and distances.
a hundred a million a third a fifth two and a half a kilo a meter and a half
• with a headache, a cold etc.I've got a headache / a toothache / an earache. Have you got a co/d?
Note that most illness words use zero articles. I’ve got flu. She's suffering from appendicitis.
These English articles are used before singular nouns. They specifically relate to any member of a group.
e.g.: A dog is in the street. Speech Therapy Job interview questions
Use definite article the
• with nationality adjectives that refer to all the people of that nationality, e.g.
The French drink a lot of wine. The Swiss are famous for their banks.
• with plural nationality nouns in same way, e.g. Russians, Americans, Poles, Greeks, Turks.
Use 'an' instead of 'a' when it comes before a vowel sound NOT just before a word that begins with a vowel.
e.g.: We say; "It's an honor to meet you" NOT "It's a honor to meet you." Why? Because the 'h' in honor is silent. e.g.: We say; "My dad belongs to a union" NOT "My dad belongs to an union."
Indefinite article with abbreviations
Acronyms and abbreviations can be problematic for those who don't know the above. Depending on how the acronym is pronounced, it can be preceded by either a or an.
e.g.: A CNC (pronounced see en see) e.g.: An MRI. (pronounced em ar eye) e.g.: A UNC basketball game (pronounced you en see)
