Exercise 1

Find Russian equivalents to the following words in the text. Learn them by heart.

Exercise 2

Match the opposites. There can be more than two opposites.

Reduce, turn on, increase, entrance, switch on, expansion, discharge valve, raise, boiling point, quality, freezing-point, turn off, vaporize, means, loosely, switch off, condense to liquid, amount, purpose, restriction, intake valve, exit, firmly, impair

Exercise 3

Write questions for the underlined parts of the sentences. Use grammar references.

1) This heat is then carried by the refrigerant from the evaporator as a low-pressure gas through a hose or line to the low side of the compressor.

2) The evaporator removes heat from the area that is to be cooled.

3) The purpose of the compressor is to circulate the refrigerant in the system under pressure.

4) Two service valves are located near the compressor as an aid in servicing the system.

5) As the room warms up, the thermostat turns the air conditioner back on

Exercise 4

Correct the mistakes

tern on, entranse, dischage valwe, rise, boilin point, turn of, vaporaise, amaunt, purpuse, contein, restrikteon, inteik valve, ekzit, furmly, impare

Exercise 5

Read the sentences and say whether they are true of false. Correct the false sentences.

1) The thermostat regulates the work of the air conditioner.

2) From the compressor, high-pressure gas is sent to the evaporator.

3) Gas is condensed to liquid in the condenser.

4) At the evaporator, the liquid dissipate heat into the air and evaporates to gas.

5) When the liquid refrigerant reaches the evaporator its pressure has been raised.

6) At the compressor, the high pressure gas is changed to low pressure gas.

7) Reed valves control the entrance and exit of refrigerant gas during the pumping operation.

8) An improperly seated intake reed valve can cause impaired cooling effect.

9) Two service valves are located inside the compressor as an aid in servicing the system.
