Заперечні займенники (the negative pronouns)

Займенник no — це заперечний займенник, має те ж саме значення, що й not ... any — перед необчислювальними іменниками та обчис­лювальними іменниками у множині. Якщо займенник no стосується іменника-додатка, його можна випустити, вживаючи дієслово - присудок у заперечній формі (перед додатком частіше вживається займенник any:

I have got no car. Або I haven’t got a car. (I haven’t got any car.)

В мене нема машини.

• Займенник no вживається перед іменником в однині і множині. Перекладається як ніякий, жоден:

Helen has no dictionary. (Helen has not got any dictio­nary.)

(В Олени нема ніякого словника.)

• Перед іменником, який виконує функцію підмета, можна вжи­вати тільки займенник no, a not ... any НЕ МОЖНА:

No train has come in time. - Жоден потяг не прийшов вчасно.

• В сполученні з прислівником where утворює прислівник no­where — ніде, нікуди:

Where did you go? — Nowhere. - Куди ви ходили? — Нікуди.

3. Заперечний займенник none виконує функцію підмета або додатка в реченні і замінює обчислювальні іменники (в однині та множині) або необчислювальні іменники, які стосуються істот та неістот:

None of them is happy. - Жоден з них не був щасливий.

Is there any milk in bottle? - (Чи є в пляшці молоко?)

No, there is none. - (Ні, немає)

3. Заперечний займенник no у сполученні із body, one та thing утво­рюють заперечні займенники nobody, no one (ніхто, нікого) та noth­ing (ніщо, нічого). Вони є займенниками-іменниками:

No one came back. - Ніхто не повернувся.

There is nothing on the table. - На столі нічого не було.

• Якщо nobody або nothing виконують функцію підмета, то діє­слово вживається в однині:

Nobody knows it. - Ніхто цього не знає.

• Після nobody та no one не вживається прийменник of, словос­получення ніхто з нас (вас, них, студентів тощо) перекладається на англійську мову як none of us (you, them, the students тощо).

None of the students knows the rule. - Ніхто з студентів не знав правило.

ПРИМІТКА !:

Слід пам’ятати, що в англійському реченні може бути тільки одне заперечення і тому наявність заперечного займенника на­дає всьому реченню заперечного значення.
