G RAMMAR COMMENT [1, p. 138]

large quantifiers Use a lot of/lots of in + sentences. Use a lot when there is no noun, e.g. He talks a lot. Much /many are normally used in –sentences and ?, but a lot of can also be used. Use plenty of in + sentences to mean as much as we need or more. small quantities Use little+ uncountable nouns, few +plural uncountable nouns. a little and a few=some, but not a lot, very little and very few=not much/many zero quantity Use any for zero quantity with a –verb. Use no with +verb. Use none (without a noun) in short answers. more than you need or want/less than you need Use too+ adjective, too much + uncountable noun, too many+ plural countable nouns. Use enough before a noun but after an adjective.

Why do women live longer than men?

A Women generally live about six years longer than men. Evidence suggests that boys are the weaker sex at birth, which means that more die in infancy. Men also have a greater risk of heart disease than women, and they have heart attacks earlier in life. Men smoke and drink more than women, and their behavior is generally more aggressive, particularly when driving, so they are more likely to die in accidents.

Also, men are more often in dangerous occupations, such as construction works.

Historically, women died in childbirth and men in wars. So nuns and philosophers often lived to great ages. Now childbearing is less risky and there are fewer wars. The country with the highest life expectancy is Japan-84 years for women and 77 for men.

B Smoking is a major problem among youth in Kazakhstan. Schooling is the major activity of most children between the ages of 7 and 17 years and school is the place where most of them socialize outside their home environment for the first time. A school is the place where much knowledge is obtained, attitudes are formed and sometimes habits are chosen. Studies have demonstrated that the secondary school age is a critical period in the formation of the smoking habit. Experimenting with cigarettes often begins during childhood or early adolescence and there is usually a period of about 1.5 to 2 years between initiation of smoking and establishment of the smoking habit. Public health officials of Kazakhstan have concluded that secondhand smoke from cigarettes causes serious diseases in non-smokers, including lung cancer and heart disease.

Everyone wants a good lifestyle. I do too. I want a good job that is eutiq near my house – I don’t want to dpesn a long time on trains and bsuse. I also want a nice house where I can relax. I like decorating and shopping for furniture. I also want lots of friends so I can do ftufs with them. My idea of a good lifestyle is being payph at work, going to the gym or going out for a meal after work, and spending the deseewkn with friends doing things or going places. Of ocseru I have to have a holiday every year in another country. I haven’t got that lifestyle yet because I haven’t got oenghu money. I’m a little jealous of my friend’s lifestyle. She has everything and is awysla going out and viangh fun.
