Many languages permit the placement of the object in front of the verb. English does not: the object usually comes immediately after the verb (Verb + object).

  1. Each of the sentences below has a group of words incorrectly placed. Move them to the correct position in the sentence.

(correct: The company only pays its... .)

  1. ABC pic will be obliged to include in its indemnification payment to XYZ pic the appropriate VAT.

You must file the reports by Tuesday.

Which do you prefer? What are the advantages of using the active voice?

Use the passive voice:

  • to protect the person (diplomacy);

  • to stress the action rather than the person (procedures);

  • when the person is unknown.

Use the active voice in all other cases.
