Общие сведения. Глагол to be может употребляться как самостоятельный смысловой глагол в значении быть, находиться, и как глагол-связка в значении быть, являться. На русский язык глагол-связка обычно не переводится. He is a teacher. — Он (есть) учитель

Examples: I am a student. He is a good friend. Are you friendly?

I was at the cinema yesterday. She was afraid of mice. We were very hungry after the exam.

I will be in London next summer. Jane will be happy to see you. They will be late for lunch.

• Для выражения отрицания в английском языке используется частица not.

Examples: 1. He is not a student. He is a teacher. 2. They are not drivers. They are carpenters.

• Для вопросительного предложения в английском языке типичен обратный порядок слов:

Сказуемое — подлежащее — второстепенные члены предложения (дополнение, обстоятельство)

Examples: She is a doctor. → Is she a doctor? Are they old? – Yes, they are. Am I right? - No, you are not.

Remember short forms! Запомните краткие формы!

I am = I’m, you are = you’re, he is = he’s, she is = she’s, it is = it’s, we are = we’re, they are = they’re

You are not = you aren’t, he is not = he isn’t, we are not = we aren’t
