Television in Our Life

It is impossible to imagine our life without TV. It plays a great and a very important role in our life. There is practically no family that doesn't have a TV set. TV is one of the kinds of mass media. Radio and newspapers tell us about different events but TV not only tells but also shows. TV has a lot of channels and everybody can watch the programs he likes. Our television suggests various programs: talk shows and game shows, news and sports events, programs about wildlife and about foreign countries and so on. We can also watch different movies, serials and cartoons on TV. TV shows us a lot of films of different genres: feature films, detective films, action films, documentary films, melodramas, comedies, thrillers, horror films, adventure films and fantasy.

Advertising is an important part of television. Commercials appear between and during most programs. They convince people to buy different kinds of products – from dog food to hair sprays, and from cars to insurance policies.

There are many advantages and disadvantages of watching TV.

Advantages:

TV gives us a lot of information from the entire world. We can know what happens in the furthest parts of the world. Thanks to TV, we can get information about politics, sports or entertaining events. We can also see important events "live", especially sports events, for example, football matches, ski jumps, tennis matches, etc.

TV also presents lots of scientific programs and nature movies. Television helps us "to visit" different lands, see new plants, animals, unusual birds, fish and insects, mountains and valleys, lakes, rivers, seas and oceans.

A lot of people watch educational programs. They teach us how to do different useful things.

We can also watch weather forecast on TV.

Disadvantages:

TV steals our free time and makes us lazy. Instead of doing some sports and exercises, we watch TV. We sit in our house opposite the screen instead of going outside and taking some fresh air.

TV is very harmful for our health, especially eyes.

Lots of young women watch soap operas which are really pointless. Moreover, there are lots of bad and brutal films on TV. They make people violent.

There is also too much advertisement on TV. Sometimes it can tell us to buy things we don’t need at all.
