Topic 59. A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body

A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body (“Mens sana in corpore sano”)

It is very important to be healthy. You can work, study and have fun only when you are healthy. “Health is the man’s greatest wealth”, the proverb says. We are healthy when all parts of our body and our mind work together properly.

The ancient Greeks knew the value of good health. They even named one goddess Hygenia, which means goddess of health. The Romans spoke about health in a proverb:" A healthy mind in a healthy body".

The human body is much more complicated than any machine. No machine can do all the things the body can do. No machine will work for 70 years or more, day and night requiring only air, water, food and a few simple rules.

The first rule of healthy way of life is to have normal weight. One of the ways to keep normal weight is to eat healthy food. A person needs vitamins and fiber. We must eat fruit and vegetables every day. A person shouldn’t eat much fat and sugar. Fat and sugar give a lot of energy. If the energy is not used it turns into fat in your body. It is not good to be very thin or very thick. Extra weight can cause serious problems, such as heart problems and diabetics.

If you want to be healthy you have to exercise regularly. Physical exercises help people keep fit and have a nice figure. They also help you lose weight and work out energy.

There are a lot of advertisements both on TV and in newspapers of different pills and drops which can help you become slim in two weeks. But all those pills cannot make a miracle.

Bad habits, such as smoking, drinking alcohol and using drugs, can ruin your health. Regular sports help people to avoid these bad habits. But what exercises are better: swimming, jogging, basketball, football, table tennis, skiing or morning exercises? All kinds of physical exercises are good for your health. So, it’s up to you to choose.

SIMPLE RULES FOR HEALTH:

  • Stand and sit in a proper way.

  • Eat healthy food. Try to eat at the same time each day.

  • Think about what you drink (Water is good, milk is good too. Do not drink soft drinks).

  • Do physical exercises.

  • Don't smoke.

  • Do not drink alcohol.

  • Do not take drugs.

  • Keep your feet dry and warm.

  • Keep your body clean.

  • Wear clean clothes.

  • Keep your teeth clean.

  • When you are reading or writing, let the light come from behind your left shoulder.

  • Breathe in as much fresh air as you can.

  • Take long walks in the open air as much as you can.

  • Get enough sleep.

  • Be happy!
