Vocabulary:

rules of etiquette – правила етикету rude – грубий

social norms – соц. норми to be on time – бути вчасно

behaviour – поведінка to be late – спізнитися

to observe – дотримуватися table manners – правила застілля

courtesy – чемність, ввічливість circumstances – обставини

polite – ввічливий bad taste – поганий смак

impolite – неввічливий in good condition – в хорошому стані

I. Answer the questions:

1. How do you understand the notion “the rules of etiquette”?

2. What are the main rules of etiquette?

3. Do some of social norms and behaviours vary in different countries? Why?

4. Why do we have to observe the rules of etiquette?

5. What are the main table manners?

6. What are the main rules of speech etiquette?

II. Read about good speech manners. Good Speech Manners

1. Do not yell when you talk to others (Yelling is for outside games or emergencies).

2. Use “please”, “thank you”, and “excuse me.”

3. Look at the person to whom you speak.

4. Do not interrupt the person who is speaking.

5. Wait your turn to speak.

6. Talking back and mocking are prohibited.

7. Bathroom words stay in the bathroom.

  1. Be polite. Do not use curse words (bad words) in your speech.

Always try to be polite In everything you do, Remember always to say "Please" And don’t forget "Thank you”.

9. Whispering secrets in front of others is rude.

10. Gossip about family and friends is never allowed.

11. Never make fun of someone’s poor grammar or pronunciation.

- Let me introduce myself

- Have a nice day!

Always say “PLEASE” !!!

For example:

Could you, please, help me?

Give me your book, please.

May I start? – Yes, please.

Always say “Thank you” !!!
