Topic 32. Computer and its Main Parts Computers in our life

Nowadays we cannot imagine our life without computers. They have become so important for us that nothing can replace them. In fact, computers can do many of the things we can do ourselves, but they cope with the work faster and better. They can predict weather and even play chess, write poetry or compose music.

There are many advantages of computers.

Firstly, the computers can save a lot of storage space. Storing information on disks is one of the most effective ways of keeping data. One computer disk can hold the same amount of information as several books.

Secondly, computers save much time. Any information can be found at the touch of a button, whereas searching for it manually takes much longer.

Thirdly, computers make our everyday life easier – from going to the bank to doing the shopping. Using a computer we can make purchases, prepare documents or just chat with friends. Besides, using the computer we can make complicated mathematical calculations.

Computers are used in laboratories. They are also used in factories and plants to control production. Sometimes computers manufacture other computers.

Computers are widely used in medicine. Thanks to them doctors can diagnose diseases faster and more thoroughly.

Computers have become irreplaceable in banking system. They control ATMs; all data is stored on special hard disks and paper isn't used in accountancy.

Furthermore, architects, designers and engineers can't imagine their work without computers.

Many directors use computers to make some special scenes and effects in the movies. Also all the cartoons are made by means of computers.

Moreover, computers navigate the modern planes and ships, and such navigation is used in modern GPS devices that can identify the exact location of the car and make a route to any point in the world.

Computers are also used in criminology. They help police to solve crimes and collect evidence.

Nowadays computers are widely used in educational process as one of the effective ways of teaching. Contact with the machine increases the interest in learning. School subjects become more interesting when the information is presented on a computer screen. Computers are also used for examination purposes.

Nevertheless, the computers have their disadvantages.

Computers sometimes break down.

Staring at a screen for a long period of time can be damaging for our eyes.

Sitting on a chair in one position for many hours is certainly not healthy.

The main threat to children is violent and bloody computer games.

The other threat is that you can become “a computer addict”. Computers limit live communication with others. People can become anti-social as they stay at home and use their computer.

To sum it up, people all over the world use computers. They are everywhere: at our homes, at schools, at work, in our cars. Computers are practically irreplaceable and we can't make without them any more.
