Topic 12. Travelling

Travelling

Modern life is impossible without travelling. Thousands of people travel every day either on business or for pleasure. They can travel by air, by rail, by sea or by road.

Of course, travelling by air is the fastest and the most convenient way of moving, but it is the most expensive too. There is none of the dust and dirt of a railway or car journey, none of the trouble of changing from one transport to another. After the registration you board the plain. You sit down in a comfortable armchair and in a few minutes you are already above the clouds. You can sit and read a book or a magazine, look through the window and watch the passing clouds which change their colour from white to black.

Travelling by train is slower than by plane, but it has its advantages. You can see many interesting places of the country you are travelling through and enjoy beautiful nature. Modern trains have very comfortable seats. There are also sleeping cars and dining cars which make even the longest journey enjoyable.

Travelling by sea is very popular. Large ships and small river boats can visit foreign countries and different places of interest within their own country. It's wonderful to feel the deck of the ship under the feet, to see the rise and fall of the waves, to feel the fresh sea wind blowing in the face, hear the cry of the sea-gulls. On board of the ship there is everything to enjoy your trip: tennis and badminton grounds, swimming pools, cinema and dancing hall. But the voyage isn't exciting for those people who are sea-sick.

Many people prefer travelling by car. It is very convenient. You needn't reserve tour tickets. You needn't carry heavy suitcases. You can stop wherever you wish, and spend as much time as you like at any place.

Many people like to travel on foot. The walker leaves the dull, broad highway and goes along little winding lanes where cars can't go. He sees the real country, the wild flowers, the young birds in their nests, the deer in the forest; he feels the quietness and calm of nature. And besides, you are saving a lot of money by travelling on foot. No one can deny that walking is the cheapest way of travelling.

The best way to study geography is to travel, and the best way to get to know and understand people, their way of life, their customs and traditions is to meet them in their own home countries.
