У нашій країні є багато талановитих вправних спортсменів. Українська школа гімнастики визнана в усьому світі. Ірина Дерюхіна, Оксана Скалдіна, Олександра Тимошенко виграли Світовий та Європейський Чемпіонати.

Протягом своєї спортивної кар'єри Лариса Латиніна завоювала 18 медалей на Олімпійських іграх, у тому числі 9 золотих, 5 срібних і 4 бронзових. Валерій Борзов – відомий український спринтер. На 20-х і 21-х Олімпійських іграх він виграв 2 золоті, 1 срібну і 2 бронзові медалі.

Serhii Bubka is considered to be the best World's Athlete. He holds 35 world records in the pole vault and was eight times world champion and Olympic champion in this kind of sport.

Being already an independent state Ukraine sent the national team to the 1992 Olympic Games, where Oksana Baiul, a young figure skater, won the first gold medal for our country.

At the 26th Olympic Games which took place in Atlanta our Ukrainian sportsmen won 9 gold medals and many silver and bronze ones. The following names have become known in the whole world: Olympic champion in gymnastics Katia Serebrianska, Olympic champion in boxing Volodymyr Klychko, Olympic champion in track-and-field athletics Inesa Kravets, Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling Viacheslav Oliinyk and others.

Sport is probably as old as the humanity itself. It has been developing with the development and growth of the mankind.

All over the world people of different ages are very fond of sports and games. Sport not only helps people to become strong and to develop physically but also makes them more organized and better disciplined in their daily activities. It makes for a healthy mind in a healthy body. Sports help people to keep in good health. We all need to exercise. Even if you don't plan to make a career in sport you still have to practice. Regular exercises give you more energy. That is why many people who suffer from general tiredness should take more exercise than more rest. Exercise makes you feel and look better. The best exercise is one which involves repeated movements, for example, walking, jogging or swimming. Bending and stretching will add flexibility and feeling of lightness.

Among the sports popular in our country are football, basketball, swimming, volleyball, ice hockey, tennis, gymnastics, figure-skating. A person can choose sports and games for any season, for any taste.

People all over the world are fond of sports and games. Sport makes people healthy, keeps them fit, makes them more organized and better disciplined. It unites people of different classes and nationalities. Many people do sports on their personal initiative. They go in for skiing, skating, table tennis, swimming, volley-ball, football, body-building, etc. All necessary facilities are provided for them: stadiums, sport grounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, skiing stations, football fields.

Sport is paid much attention to in our educational establishments. Gymnastics is a part of children's daily activities in the kindergartens. Physical training is compulsory subject at schools and colleges. Professional sport is also paid much attention to in our country. In city, where I live, there are different sporting societies, clubs and complexes.

Practically all kinds of sports are popular in our country, but football, gymnastics and tennis enjoy the greatest popularity. As for me, I go in for table tennis. It needs mobility, liveliness and much energy. It keeps a person in a good form. I have been playing tennis for five years, but the more I play, the more I like it. I get a real joy taking part in competitions or simply playing with my friends. Sometimes, I go to tennis courts.
