Еhe concept of the airbag - a soft pillow to land against in a crash - has been around for many years. The first patent on an inflatable4 crash-landing5 device for airplanes was filed during World War II. In the 1980s, the first commercial airbags appeared in automobiles.
Since6, all new cars sold in the United States have had airbags on both driver and passenger sides. Statistics show that airbags reduce the risk7 of dying8 in a direct frontal crash by about 30%. Then came seat-mounted and door-mounted side airbags. Today, some cars have six or even eight airbags.
How does the device work? Laws of Motion9
We know that moving10 objects have momentum11 (the product of the mass and the velocity12 of an object). Unless an outside force13 acts on an object, the object will continue to move10 at its present speed and direction. Cars consist of several objects, including the vehicle itself, loose14 objects in the car and passengers. If these objects are not restrained2, they will continue moving10 at whatever speed the car is traveling at, even if the car is stopped by a collision15.
When a car crashes, the force required to stop an object is very great because the car's momentum has changed instantly16 while the passengers' has not. The goal17 of any airbag is to help stop the passenger while doing as little damage as possible18.
The airbag has the space19 between the passenger and the steering wheel or dashboard and a fraction of a second20 to work with. Even that tiny amount of space and time is valuable21, if the system can slow the passenger.
