WORKING ON THE TEXT

AT THE RUSSIAN TRADE DELEGATION

This is Mr. Voronin. He is an engineer of the Ministry of Trade. The engineers of the Ministry often go to different countries to do business with foreign companies. Now Mr. Voronin is in London. He works at the Russian Trade Delegation. Mr. Voronin is usually very busy. He has got much work to do every day. His office hours begin at 8.30. In the morning he looks through Russian and English newspapers and journals. He is interested in the latest political and business events. During the day Mr. Voronin works on the computer, meets English businessmen and discusses with them prices for different goods, terms of payment, shipment and delivery. Sometimes he discusses business matters on the phone. Together with Russian inspectors he often goes to plants in and outside London. Now you see Mr. Voronin in his office at the Russian Trade Delegation in High-gate1. It's 2 o'clock in the afternoon. He is looking through the mail. He usu­ally receives a lot of mail, but today he has got few letters and telexes on his desk. He is reading a letter. It is an en­quiry for telephone equipment from his company. Mr. Voronin knows Blake&Co. are selling2 a new model of this equipment. He is going to phone Mr. Вlakе, the manager of the company.

Now Mr. Voronin is making the appointment on the phone with Mr. Blake, the manager of the company.

Secretary: Blake&Co. Good morning!

Voronin: Good morning! This is Voronin of the Russian Trade Delegation. I'd like to speak to Mr Blake.

Secretary: Just a moment3, please. You are through4.

Blake: Blake speaking5.

Voronin: Good morning, Mr. Blake. I've got an enquiry for telephone equipment from my company. We are interested in your new model. I'd like to have your latest catalogues and quotation. Could I meet you at our Trade Delegation on Monday?

Blake: Sorry, I'm very busy on Monday. How about Wednesday morning at ten o'clock?

Voronin: Good. See you on Wednesday7. Good-bye!

London

  1. London is the capital of Great Britain. It lies in the South East of England on both banks of the river Thames. London is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest port and industrial centre in England. London is more than twenty centuries old.

  2. The heart of the capital is the City. The territory of the City is only about one square mile, but it is the financial and business centre of the country. It contains almost all important English banks and offices.

  3. The West End of London is famous for its beautiful monuments and palaces, fine parks, fashionable shops and big hotels. The East End is quite different from the West End. It is the district of factories, plants and docks. The narrow streets and poor houses of the East End present a contrast to the homes of the rich people in the West End.

  4. There are many places of interest in London. One of them is Trafalgar Square with the Nelson monument 185 feet high. Buckingham palace is the royal residence. Westminster Abbey is one of the most beautiful buildings in London. It contains the memorials of many famous citizens of Britain.

  5. Across the road from Westminster Abbey are the Houses of Parliament, the seat of the British government.

  6. The Tower of London is one of the most interesting places in London. It was a fortress, a royal residence, a prison, now it is a museum.

  7. London is famous for its green parks. Hyde Park is the most popular of them. It is the greatest park in London as well.

  8. London is the centre of the country’s cultural life. There are many picture galleries and museums in the capital. The National Gallery houses a priceless collection of paintings. The famous British museum is one of the best museums in the world.

Many English families have got their own houses, but some people live in flats. There are two floors in the traditional English house: the ground floor and the first floor. People in England like their homes and always show them to their visi­tors.

Mr. Dunn, a British businessman, often comes to the Russian Trade Delegation and he knows Mr. Voronin very well. One Sun­day he invites Mr. Voronin and some engineers to his place to spend an evening with his family.

Mr Dunn's family lives in a small house with a garden. There is a sitting-room and a study downstairs. The kitchen is down­stairs too. The sitting-room is large and sunny. There is a sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table there. There is a standard lamp, and a colour TV-set there too. Above the coffee table there is a nice wall-lamp. A green carpet on the floor makes the room com­fortable.

In the kitchen there is an electric cooker, a refrigerator with a freezer, a dish-washer and a cupboard. Mrs. Dunn has got a lot of dishes: plates, cups, glasses and many knives, forks and spoons.

The study is a small room with bookshelves on the walls. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a bathroom.

The Dunns1 love their house and think: "There is no place like home"2.

Now Mr. Dunn and Mr. Voronin are sitting near the fireplace in Mr. Dunn's study.

Voronin: This is a lovely room, Mr. Dunn.

Dunn: I'm glad you like it. It's always a pleasure to sit here and read newspapers and magazines after a long day in the office. And where do you live in Moscow, Mr. Voronin?

Voronin: We live in a three-room flat in a new district of Moscow.

Dunn: Is your flat comfortable?

Voronin: Yes, very. There's much built-in furniture in our hall and in the kitchen. The windows are large and the rooms are light.

Dunn: In which room do you like to spend evening hours?

Voronin: In the sitting-room. We usually watch television or VCR3 or listen to music on compact disks.

Dunn: Yes, it's always nice to spend a quiet evening with the family.

Voronin: I think so too.

Понятие об артикле.

Артиклями называются особые слова-определители, употребляемые перед существительными. Артикли являются служебными словами и обычно самостоятельного значения не имеют.

В современном английском языке имеются два артикля; определенный the и неопределенный a (an). Неопределен­ный артикль a (an) употребляется с исчисляемыми сущест­вительными в форме единственного числа.

Неопределённый артикль а употребляется перед существительными, начинающимися с согласного звука. Пе­ред существительными, начинающимися с гласного звука, употребляется форма an.

Неопределенный артикль имеет классифицирующее значение; он обозначает, что существительное, определяе­мое им, относится к классу предметов, является одним из подобного рода предметов.

Существительное с неопределенным артиклем отвечает на вопросы: "что за предмет?", "какого рода предмет?", "как его можно назвать?", "к какого рода предметам его можно отнести?";

'This is an apple. Это яблоко. (а не груша, не апель­син)

'That's a tie. To галстук. (а не шарф, не косынка)

Перед именами собственными артикль не употребля­ется.

'This is Ben. Это Бен.

My 'name's Bill. Меня зовут Билл.

Неопределенный артикль не употребляется с исчисляе­мыми существительными во множественном числе.

This is a book. — These are books.

Определенный артикль the употребляется с существительными, как в единственном, так и во множественном числе. Определенный артикль имеет индивидуализирующее значение; он показывает, что речь идет именно о данном предмете (или предметах), и близок по значению к таким словам, как этот, тот, тот самый.

The map is good.

This is an apple. The apple is red.
