CHAPTER 4. Engine turbines.

A turbine is a vane assembly which converts thermal, kinetic and pressure energy into mechanical work.

There are two turbines on the engine – a compressor turbine and free turbine and they have no kinetic connection.

4.1. COMPRESSOR TURBINE

It is an axial-flow, two-stage turbine (fig. 4.1, suppl. fig. 4.2). Its purpose is to produce power which is transmitted to the compressor rotor and for the engine accessories.

The compressor turbine consists of a nozzle assembly casing 2, two nozzle assemblies 11, 12, a rotor 13 and the III support of the engine.

The casing of welded construction and it is common for the nozzle assemblies of the I and II stages. There are 14 thermocouples 4 in the casing and holders 6, 9 with a honey comb seal 7.

Nozzle assemblies are used to accelerate the gas stream and to direct it to the rotor vanes with a designed angle. The nozzle assembly of the I stage comprises an outer holder, vanes of the nozzle assembly, an inner holder and a rotor labyrinth (the honey comb seal).

The vanes of the nozzle assembly are cast, hollow (to be cooling with the secondary air). They are installed on the shaped slots in the holders.

The nozzle assembly of the II stage is all-cast and hollow. It is centered in the casing on the rectangular pins.

The rotor of the turbine takes up the force of the gas pressure, i.e. it converts thermal energy of the gas flow into the mechanical force.

It consists of a hollow shaft, two discs with vanes and 4 covering discs. These units are interconnected by means of splines and bolts. The vanes have locks of “Christmas tree” shape which are used to enlarge the heat emission area. On the tips of the vanes there are shelves with sealing labyrinths forming an annular rim which makes them vibration-proof. The sealing labyrinths are located on the shaft and over all the covering discs.

The turbine shaft is located on the turbo compressor rotor supports: in the front part it rests upon the II support through the compressor rotor, and the tail part of it rests upon the III support. The III support (see suppl. fig. 4.6) consists of the casing (jack) of the support, a ball bearing and a graphite sealing.

The support jack is connected to the inner rim of the nozzle assembly of the III support. The support is pressurized from the VII stage of the compressor. The oil is supplied through the external pipe from МА-78 oil pump.

4.2. FREE TURBINE

The purpose of the free turbine (fig. 4.5) is to produce power required for MR rotation. It consists of the nozzle assembly casing (II and IV stages), rotor and rotor supports.

The casings 9, 15 of the III and IV stages are rigid; they comprise all-cast nozzle assemblies which are mounted in special recesses of the casings. The vanes 11, 21 are hollow.

The III stage nozzle assembly, except the vanes, has 3 rigid struts 10. The jack of the III support 4, 5 is welded to the inner holder of the nozzle assembly.

On the nozzle assembly of the III stage there are oil delivery pipe unions, pipelines for oil scavenge and for pressurization the III support from III stage (on the right), a hatch for inspection of the gas-air duct of the turbine and a flange for delivery of the cold air from the VII stage.

Two holders 14, 19 with honey comb seals are installed in the casing of the nozzle assembly of the VII stage.

The rotor of the free turbine is of cantilever type, having 2 supports. It consists of 2 operating discs and operating vanes 12, 20 and the sealing labyrinth 25. All these units are interconnected by means of splines and bolts. The design of the free turbine rotor is similar to the turbo compressor rotor. Inside the rotor shank there are splines for its connection to the spring shaft.

The supports of the rotor (see suppl. fig. 5.2) (IV and V engine supports) comprise the casing of the supports, bearing (the IV one is a ball bearing and the V one is a roller bearing) and graphite sealings.

The two-stage gearbox of the MR speed governor is mounted in the casing of the supports. On this casing there are also 3 free turbine RPM transmitters (ДТА-10), pipe unions for pressurization the supports from the V stage, pipe for oil delivery through the cut-off valve and the pipe for oil scavenge from the supports.

4.3. THE TURBINES COOLING

Temperature decrease of turbine hot elements is provided their max insulation from the influence of hot gases. The cooling system is of air type.

The compressor turbine is cooled with the secondary air. This air cools the cavities of the nozzle assembly casings, the holders of the vanes, the hollow vanes of the nozzle assemblies, the side walls of the operating ring and the lock part of the operating vanes. The air is delivered for cooling through the technological openings into components.

The free turbine is cooled with the air delivered from the VII stage. The principal of cooling is similar to the compressor turbine cooling. (see suppl. fig. 4.7)

4.4. TURBINE OPERATION

The principle of turbine operation is based on transformation of the heat energy and the energy of gas pressure into kinematic energy and so transforming kinematic energy of the gas flow into rotary movement of the rotor.

The combination of the nozzle assembly (stators) and turbine rotor (rotors) constitute a turbine stage.

The nozzle assembly transforms the gas flow energy: axial speed C is increased (see fig. 4.4) and pressure P and temperature t decrease.

In the channels between turbine rotor vanes axial speed C, pressure P and temperature t decrease, while relative speed W increase..

b) Diagram of forces effecting the operating ring.

c) Change of gas parameters in the turbine stage.

d) Diagram of the torque moment on the turbine shaft.

The essence of torque occurrence on the turbine shaft is that gas flow speed about the rotating vane is different on its convex and concave sides, so the pressure difference appears.

  • заброс tг;

  • помпаж компрессора;

  • отказ отдельных форсунок;

  • некондиционное топливо;

      • увеличение tг;

      • выброс искр из выходного патрубка;

      • усиление вибрации (горит табло);

      • следы частиц металла на выходном патрубке;

      • двигатель не выдает полную мощность.

    1. Обрыв турбинных лопаток.

      • резкий хлопок и удар;

      • усиление вибрации (горит табло);

      • резкое увеличение tг;

Moreover, gas impact on the vane creates active force Ра, and due to the blade acceleration reactive force R is created. The annular components of these forces Ра окр., и Rокр. create torque Мкр, and their axial components Ра ос., and Rос. are transferred to the engine casing by the bearings.

The head distribution between compressor turbine and free turbine is related to their air ducts cross sections and engine power. Foe example, during shut down and start up the bigger portion of head is consumed in the compressor turbine, which simplify rotor spin-up by the air starter. If engine power increases more head is consumed by the free turbine, which leads to the increase of its RPM till stable constant power is achieved nНВ=const. If the flight conditions change causes redistribution of the head in the turbines and MR RPM change, then MR RPM governor restores the balance by changing the fuel supply into the combustion chamber.

4.5. PROBABLE TROUBLES OF THE TURBINES

Reason – unproper cooling and lubrication.

  1. Rotor blades stretching.
