Предисловие

Настоящее методическое пособие к дисциплине «Теоретическая фонетика» предназначено для самостоятельной, а также аудиторной работы студентов 2-5 курсов. Пособие содержит материал лекционных и семинарских занятий по программе курса. Каждая тема излагается по указанному вначале плану, завершается рядом практических заданий по данной теме.

Предлагаемый в методическом пособии материал носит научно-информативный и поисковый характер, позволяет студенту овладеть научными знаниями о фонетической системе изучаемого языка, ее законах и принципах исследования, а также приобрести умения различать и анализировать фонетические явления сегментного и супрасегментного уровней. Данный теоретический курс читается на английском языке, включает основные лингвистические понятия, принятые в современной теории английской фонетики, что способствует развитию языковой компетенции студента факультета иностранных языков.

3. The division of speech flow into minimal linguistic units and its main criteria

4. Phoneme and its allophones, the relations between them. Kinds and types of allophones.

Assignments:

1. What proves that a labiolized [k°] (e.g. quota) is not phonemically opposed to a corresponding non-labiolized [k] (e. g. cutter)?

2. What testifies to the absence of phonemical opposition between a nasalized [ʌ] (e.g. tongue) and nonnasalized [ʌ] (e.g. cut)?

3. How can you prove that a velarized (dark) [l] (e.g. dull) and a clear [l] (e.g. little) are the allophones of one and the same phoneme?

4. Do these words testify to the fact that [i]and [i:] are two different phonemes in English but not the allophones of one the same phoneme?

['bi: və] beaver – ['kitʃən] kitchen

['mi: tə] meter – ['bistə] bistre (a yellowish-brown paint)

5. Do these words testify to the opposition [ɔ:] – [ɔ]in English:

[brɔ:t] brought, [lɔ:n] lawn,

6. What is the common feature for the English phonemes: [ʒ, ʃ, ʧ, ʤ]?

7. Which distinctive feature is the basis of the opposition between the phonemes: [p –b], [s – z], [v – f]?

8. Which distinctive feature is the basis of the opposition between the phonemes: [b – m], [d – n]?

9. Which distinctive feature is the basis of the opposition between the phonemes: [t – s], [b – v]?

ONE TOO MANY FOR HIM

A schoolboy who had been working a good deal at arithmetic, came home one summer for his holidays. One evening there were two roast pigeons on the dinner table: and the boy who thought himself very smart said to his father. "I can prove to you by arithmetic that these two pigeons are three." "Oh" said his father, "how do you manage that?" "Well, this is one, and that is two: and one and two make three."

"How very clever!" exclaimed his father.

"Then your mother shall have the first, I'll eat the second, and you can have the third."
