Summary
Kozyura O.V. Prose of John Fowles: the aspects of postmodern interpretation.– Manuscript.
A dissertation for the Candidate degree in Philology. Speciality 10.01.04 – Literature of Foreign Countries. – Institute of Literature named after T.G. Shevchenko. The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv, 2006.
The dissertation is devoted to the analysis of poetic specificity of J. Fowles’s prose in the context of European postmodernism, connections of his creative work with philosophical and ethical discourse of the second half of XX century. It is stated that the author uses methods and means of postmodern plot design with its game, reminiscential, mythopoetical, parody elements.
The study of the narrative organization of Fowles’s prose revealed philosophical and ethical implication of the writing, psychological and intellectual aspects of novels, complex system of symbols and mythologemes. So, its underlined reminiscence, mythological game implication, philosophical richness which approach the novel up to the level of a novel-metaphor with philosophical and symbolical sounding are marked among structurally-semantic components of the novel „The Collector”.
In the course of work it was established that narrative collision of the novel „The Magus” and its figurative system are based on strong mytholiterary traditions. Methods of antithesis as basic beginning of narration, game elements, combination of various styles are reflected in this novel.
As a result of the analysis of postmodern structure of the novel „The French Lieutenant’s Woman” it has been revealed that presence of the „historical” factor in the plot is largely perceived in a greater extent metaphorically. The art structure of narration, the system of stylistic means give grounds to consider „The French Lieutenant’s Woman” the „pseudo-historical” novel, as well as the novel „The Maggot” in which John Fowles used the historical background as means of expressive setting of modern problems.
A special attention in the work is paid to analysis of specificity of an art style which finishes the structurally-semantic whole of Fowles’s pen. It is noted that the metaphors and motives serving to complete perception of works (metaphors of „ocean”, „island”, „time”, „life-theatre”, etc.) connect the structure of J. Fowles’s novels into one whole. Basic tendencies of Fowles’s style, system of figurative comparisons, cues, metaphors forming narrative technique, composition, genre originality of writing are analyzed.
Key words: discourse, game, metaphor, mythological creation, poetic, postmodernism, structure, style.
