3. Complete the dialogues using the past continuous.

Example: A: What (you / read) when I came in?

What were you reading when I came in?

B: I (not / read) anything.

I was not reading anything.

A: Yes, (you / + )

Yes, you were.

B: I (look for) my letter which I received not long ago.

I was looking for my letter which I received not long ago.

4. Change the sentences so that the past continuous is used instead of the past simple. Think what details it is necessary to add. Example: The ship slowed down the speed entering the port.

The ship was slowing down the speed while she was entering the port.

Lesson 2 Past Continuous (continued)

The Past Continuous Tense может употребляться в сложноподчиненных предложениях для выражения длительных действий. Одно сложное предложение может включать два или несколько действий, происходящих одновременно. В этом случае предложения соединяются союзом while (в то время как, пока).

While we were sailing into the port, our sister ship was sailing out.

Главное и придаточное предложения могут соединяться союзом when, если в придаточном предложении действие не длительное и союзом while, если необходимо выразить длительность.

He was cleaning the deck when the storm began.

While I was inspecting the safety equipment, he sounded the alarm signal.
