Unit 2. Pirates on board lesson 1 Прошедшее продолженное время (The Past Continuous Tense)

Past Continuous употребляется для обозначения действия, которое происходило в определенный момент или период времени в прошлом.

Форма глаголов в Past Continuous образуется при помощи глаголов to be в прошедшем времени и Participle I смыслового глагола:

was / were + Participle I

Момент совершения действия обозначается:

  1. Точным указанием времени:

They were keeping watch yesterday at

7 p.m.

Они стояли на вахте вчера в 7 вечера.

  1. Другим действием, выраженным глаголом в Past Simple:

When the Captain came, the Second Officer was checking the charts.

Когда пришел капитан, второй помощник проверял карты.

Past Continuous употребляется для выражения действия, которое совершалось в течение данного периода времени в прошлом:

1. He was translating the text from 10 to 11.30 a.m.

2. They were painting the superstructure the whole day yesterday.

1. Он переводил текст с 10 до 11.30 утра.

2. Они красили надстройку вчера целый день.

Вопросительная форма в Past Continuous

1. Were they repairing the pump at 9 a.m.?

2. Who was repairing the pump at 9 a.m.?

3. What were they repairing at 9 a.m.?

4. When were they repairing the pump?

1. Они ремонтировали насос в 9 утра?

2. Кто ремонтировал насос в 9 утра?

3. Что они ремонтировали в 9 утра?

4. Когда они ремонтировали насос?

Отрицательная форма в Past Continuous

1. He wasn`t reading an instruction when the chief engineer entered.

2. We weren`t keeping watch at 7 p.m.

1. Он не читал инструкцию, когда стармех вошел.

2. Мы не стояли на вахте в 7 вечера.

1. Complete the sentences using the required form of the verb to be in the past.

  1. The crewmen (was /were) working on deck the whole day yesterday.

  2. The radio officers (was /were) keeping watch when they heard the SOS signal.

  3. What (was /were) your sister doing when you entered the room? – She (was / were) reading a book.

  4. Our second engineer (was / were) overhauling the engine from 9 to 12 a.m.

  5. The icebreaker Sibir (was /were) approaching the port when we came there.

  6. The bosun (was /were) inspecting the safety equipment at 10 a.m.

  7. Who (was /were) repairing the pumps from 6 to 9 yesterday? – The motormen (was /were).

  8. The apprentices (was /were) setting sails while the Captain (was /were) speaking to a pilot.

  9. The future navigators were learning how to handle the navigational equipment from 9 till 11 a.m.

  10. The teacher (was /were) reading a lecture while the cadets (was / were) making necessary notes.

2. Make up questions to the following sentences beginning them with the given interrogative pronouns.

  1. The cadets were scrubbing ship`s deck the whole morning. (when?)

  2. When we met this ship she was sailing northwards. (where?)

  3. I was preparing for the exam in History yesterday from 6 to 10p.m. (what?)

  4. The second engineer was keeping watch from 0800 till 1200 because the forth engineer was not well. (why?)

  5. He heard that somebody was laughing loudly. (what?)

  6. The wind was blowing without interval for some days. (how long?)

  7. They were courageously fighting the fire when the assistance arrived. (how?)
