Unit 14. How to write a letter to authorities/editors

Give the definition to this type of formal letter using the information from the previous units.

14.1. Complete the table “Language and Vocabulary Use in Letter Writing” in Your Writing Portfolio Section B. using the information given about letters of request in the book “Successful Writing” pp. 97-98, it`s available on CD-ROM.

14.2. Project Task

14.2.1. Look at the following writing prompts, do the tasks after it. Follow the instructions that will help you to work on the project. Don’t forget the rules of working on a project.

A) A motorway is to be built near your house. As you think it will destroy areas of natural beauty, write a letter to the local authorities expressing your views. You should explain what damage will be caused and suggest alternative routes.

B) You’ve recently received a number of comments from local residents, some of which are printed below. As the representative of your local residents` committee and the head of a school, write a letter to the authorities outlining people`s concern and outlining what should be done:

  • They throw bottles into my garden and tear my plants!”

  • Teenagers roam in gangs and I get frightened!”

  • The walls are covered with graffiti!”

  • Unknown people are often phoning us and frighten us!”

  • Young hooligans race round the square on motor bikes!”

14.2.2. Work in pairs and complete the table “Structure of your letter” to make a guide for your letter writing. If your`ve got some problems, use Your Writing Portfolio.

14.2.3. Choose ONE of the writing tasks above, and write a complete paragraph plan with notes for your, discuss it with your partner. Check yourself according Self-assessment checklist of the Writer`s 5 Ws, see Your Writing Portfolio. Then write your letter individually in about 300 words.

14.2.4. Assess your own paper using Student Writing Assessment Checklist: Rating Scale, see Your Writing Portfolio. Assess your partner`s paper using Writing Assessment Checklist of Letters: Rating Scale, see Your Writing Portfolio.

14.2.5. Present the results of your project work to your teacher, groupmates. Let the teacher or experts assess your paper.
