Unit 13. How to write business thank you letters
13.1. Give the definition to this type of formal letter using the information from the previous units.
In a business context, thank you letters are often appropriate and expected. When you have attended an interview, it is considered polite to send a thank you note. You might also send a thank you letter when someone has given you their time and advice.
13.2. Read these letters and answer the questions that follow. Write the answers in your Learner Diary.
Dear Mr. Green, Thank you for giving me your time on Friday 18th, when you kindly showed me around the factory. It was fascinating to see how the widgets are manufactured, and I now feel confident that I want to pursue a career in the widget manufacturing field. I’ve attached my resume and wonder if you’d be kind enough to keep it on file, in case any future positions arise that I might be suitable for?

You took part in an international conference “Teaching English and other Community Languages to Adults. Family Learning and Functional Skills” 2 weeks ago. Write a letter to its organizers expressing your gratitude.

13.3. Project task
13.3.1. Think of the situations when you`re to write a business thank you letter. Make a list of the situations in pairs. Then create writing prompts for you’re your groupmates.
13.3.2. Write business thank you letters using one of your groupmate`s prompts.
a) Write a complete paragraph plan with notes for your, discuss it with your partner. Check yourself according Self-assessment checklist of the Writer`s 5 Ws, see Your Writing Portfolio Section E. Then write your letter individually in about 300 words.
b) Assess your partner’s paper using the Letter Assessment Scale: Holistic Scale, see Your Writing Portfolio Section C.
c) Present the results of your project work to your teacher, group mates. Let the teacher or experts assess your paper.
d) Put your written paper and the assessment results in your Writing Portfolio.
