Unit 7. How to write a letter of request

Give the definition to this type of formal letter using the information from the previous units.

7.1. Complete the table “Language and Vocabulary Use in Letter Writing” in Your Writing Portfolio that is available on CD-ROM. Using the information given about letters of request in the book “Successful Writing” pp. 85-87, it`s available on CD-ROM.

7.2. Discuss the following question in pairs. You may use your notes from your Writing Portfolio. Write your answers in your Learner Diary.

7.3. Project Task 1.

Look at the following writing prompts, do the tasks after it. Follow the instructions that will help you to work on the project. Don`t forget the rules of working on a project.

  1. You’re the head of an amateur drama club. Write a letter to a local school of Arts requesting permission to use their facilities and explaining why your drama club cannot find facilities elsewhere. Suggest how this may be arranged so that your club’s rehearsals will not interfere with the school’s activities.

  2. You work at the children’s home which needs volunteers to help at weekends. Write to the local newspaper requesting that they publicize the vacancies. You should include the details of what is required of the applicants and explain the in which both volunteers and children might benefit.

7.3.1 Surf the Net and find:

    1. the school for your amateur drama club`s rehearsals in your town, have a thorough look at its facilities;

    2. the children`s home you work at in your town.

7.3.2. Work in pairs and complete the table “Structure of your letter” to make a guide for your letter writing. If your`ve got some problems, use Your Writing Portfolio Section A, B.

7.3.3. Choose one of the writing tasks above, and write a complete paragraph plan with notes for your letter, discuss it with your partner. Check yourself according Self-assessment checklist of the Writer’s 5 Ws, see Your Writing Portfolio Section E.

Then write your letter individually in about 300 words.

7.3.4. Assess your own paper using Student Writing Assessment Checklist: Rating Scale, see Your Writing Portfolio that is available on CD-ROM. Assess your partner’s paper using the Letter Assessment Scale: Holistic Scale, see Your Writing Portfolio.

7.3.5. Present the results of your project work to your teacher, groupmates. Let the teacher or experts assess your paper.

7.3.6. Put your written paper and the assessment results in your Writing Portfolio.
