Read and translate the text: The Educational system of Great Britain
The educational system of GB is extremely complex and bewildering. It is very difficult to generalize particular types of schools as schools differ from one to the other.
The department of education and science is responsible for national educational policy, but it doesn't employ teacher or prescribe curricula or text books. Each school has its own board of governers consisting of teachers, parents, local politicians, members of local community, businessmen and sometimes pupils.
Schooling for children is compulsory from 5 to 16, though some provision is made for children under 5 and some pupils remain at school after 16 to prepare for higher education.
The state school system is usually divided into 2 stages (secondary and primary). The majority of primary schools are mixed. They are subdivided into infant schools (ages 5 to 7) and junior schools (ages 7 to11). In junior schools pupils were often placed in A,B,C or D-streams, according to their abilities.
Under the pressure of progressive parents and teachers the 11+ examination has now been abolished in most parts of the country. There are several types of schools in GB.
Grammar schools provide an academic course for selected pupils from the age of 11 to 18. Only those children who have the best results are admitted to these schools. They give pupils a high level of academic education which can lead to the university.
Technical Schools offer a general education with a technical bias and serve those pupils who are more mechanically minded. The curriculum includes more lessons of science and mathematics.
Secondary modern schools were formed to provide a non-academic education for children of lesser attainment. The curriculum includes more practical subjects.
Answer the questions, work in pairs:
1. What kind of system the educational system of GB is?
2. Do the types of schools differ?
3. What is the function of the department of education of GB?
4. What does each school in GB has?
5. What schooling is compulsory for children?
6. Who can remain at school after 16?
7. How is the state school system divided into?
8. Do pupils have the 11+ examination? Why not?
9. What types of schools in GB do you know? Describe them.
Write down in your copybooks the gist of the text ( use the answers to the questions 1,5,6,7,9.).
Make the plural of the nouns: system, child, ability, school, teacher, curriculum, country, result, lesson, course, university.
Make up sentences using the Present Perfect Tense:
I/to see/my boss/today.
Helen/to decorate/her room/already.
My cousins/to be/to this cinema/never.
You/to spend/a lot of money/this month.
We/to get/some letters/this week.
The dog/to run away/just.
Write short answers to the questions:
Has Jessica walked the dog today? — Yes, ... .
Have you read this novel? — No, ... .
Has your brother ever been abroad? — Yes, ... .
Have James and Brian told you about the conference? — Yes, ... .
