7. Act out the situations.

Imagine you are invited to take part in the students’ discussion concerning tastes in music. This is the part of your speech.

The term “world-music” was actually invented by a group of record producers a few years ago, so that record shops would have a convenient special section where customers could find this kind of music. Record buyers didn’t even know where to find it in the few shops that did stock it! This kind of music tended to be only available as imports and was hard to come by anyway.

  • You are an experienced guide, who tells a group of foreign tourists about EuroRoute of the English Channel.

EuroRoute is a scheme that operates at much lower running costs than the Channel Tunnel. Er… what happens is this: motorway bridges go from each cost… er… 10 kilometers out from the cost and connect up with a 20 kilometer submerged concrete tube tunnel made on two man-made islands in the English Channel. Er… the… roadways spiral gently down to the level of the tunnel. It’s the same principal as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in the USA and it… it’s well-researched technology. Thinking ahead to the 21st century, er… I believe that people will prefer, w… will want to drive across, not queue up waiting for trains.

And finally, there are also two separate supplementary rail-only tunnels, and they can take up to 30 high-speed passenger and freight trains in each direction per hour.

Theoretical Material

The term ‘declamatory’ serves for many kinds of linguistic activity, but we should like to focus reader’s attention on two varieties of oral representation of written literary texts, namely:

    1. reading aloud a piece of descriptive prose (the author’s words) ;

2) the author’s reproduction of actual conversation (the speech of the characters).

The intonation of reading descriptive prose has many features in common with that of reading scientific prose. In both styles the speaker makes use of the same set of intonational means, but their frequency of occurrence is different here.
