  • Listen to the following extract from the keynote speech carefully, sentence by sentence. Practise reading each sentence after the-recorder according to the suggested intonation patterns.

Ladies and gentlemen. If I could have your attention for a moment, please. I have the final notices for this final session of the conference. Now, first of all. I’d like to mention that the urban position session has been very popular, so we are moving the final discussion to Room 201. That’s Room 201, which means that the domestic shelter session will be changed from Room 201 to Room 304. That’s the domestic shelter session in Room 304. I hope everybody’s got that.

  • Listen to the following speech carefully, sentence by sentence. Underline the nuclear word of each intonation group, mark the stresses and tunes. Practise reading each sentence after the tape-recorder.

Right. I think everyone’s hear now. Now, settle down and concentrate. You’ll need a lot of energy today, so I hope you had a good breakfast. Now, er, you’ve all got a sketch map of the estuary. (Oh, erm, I haven’t got one). Oh, sorry, here you are, Jane. Late as usual. Right. We’ll leave at 9 a.m. prompt. We want to catch the ebb tide. Now, don’t forget your life-jackets and of course thick sweater and anorak. It’ll be cold as get near the open sea.

  • Listen to the following passage carefully, sentence by sentence. Mark the boundaries of the sense-groups and the tunes. Practise reading each sentence after the tape-recorder.

Finally, I have a reminder from Dr. Coidman of the Chicago Institute, that the 6th Annual Convention of P.E.S. will be held in Hawaii in October, er, 1986. I think you’ll all be, er, interested in marking that data in your calendar. That’s the 6th Annual Convention of P.E.S. October, 1986. And I’d like anybody that’s interested in that conference to leave your name at the conference desk. Thank you very much.
