Module 8

Informational style

Theoretical Material

It occurs in formal discourse where the task set by the sender of the message is to give information without any emotional evaluation.

The informational style is used by radio and TV announcers when reading weather forecasts, news or in various official situations.

The major types of TV and radio performers include actors, entertainers, talk-show hosts, announcers and other specialists. Each type of performer must develop special skills, as well as those general communication skills necessary for all effective speakers.

Radio and TV announcers entertain and inform their listening audiences. Therefore, they need exceptional verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Announcers must be able to read script so that it sounds fresh and natural. They must be ready at any time to speak extemporaneously (спонтанно), so their ability to sustain an enthusiastic tone of voice is of great importance.

Radio and TV announcers perform for listening audiences, but unlike many other performers, they neither hear nor see their listeners. As a result, there is no immediate feedback to help them see their effectiveness as communicators during a broadcast.

So, in most cases the speaker sounds dispassionate. To achieve this, one must take into consideration the following features of the informational style:

  • The definite intonation pattern is used:

Low Pre-Head+Falling Head Low Fall Low Tail

Low Rise High Tail

Stepping Head High Fall

Fall-Rise

  • Intonation groups tend to be short.

  • Pauses are semantically predictable, as words in the intonation groups are joined by sense.

  • Duration of pauses varies from medium to long at the end of the sentences. Short pauses occur at the non-final sense-groups.

Passives are often used in news broadcasts because we are more interested in what happened than in who or what caused it to happen:

e.g. The offender was indicted on capital charge.

His condition is described as stable.

The use of passive constructions makes news broadcast sound more impersonal and more objective.

So, effective announcers must be vigilant about articulating precisely, varying voice volume without speaking too loudly or softly, and altering pitch for emphasis.
