Chapter 20 socioemotional development in late adulthood

This chapter illustrates how in late adulthood individuals come to understand that our lives are lived forward but understood backward. Such life reviews can provide adaptive and constructive outcomes.

But before reading try to do the following:

a) answer and discuss the following questions:

1. Can you evaluate the claim that old people are an economic burden on society because they do not work and suffer poor health? Do you agree with the statement that old age isn’t a problem, loneliness is …?

2. Have you ever encountered ageism? Indicate efforts to combat it.

3. Indicate the incidence of poverty among the elderly, and discuss the income needs of older adults. Indicate the incidence of various living arrangements among older adults.

b) explain the term “retrospection” [ֽretrə'spek∫(ə)n] (ретроспекция, размышление о прошлом) in English.

c) find synonyms and antonyms to:

withdraw, disengage, prejudice.

d) guess the meaning of the following words and word combinations without using the dictionary:

e) do the following phonetic exercises:
