Chapter 7 socioemotional development

In infancy

Newborns of different species vary in their ability to enter the world and function on their own. This chapter describes the developmental status of human newborn and its socioemotional development.

But before reading try to do the following:

a) answer and discuss the following questions:

1. Do you agree with the claim that day-care is harmful to infant social development?

2. Could you explain how infants socialize their parents?

3. Is family a system of interacting individuals? Discuss possible causes of individual differences in attachment.

b) explain the term attachment[ə'tæt∫mənt] (привязанность, преданность) in English.

c) find synonyms and antonyms to:

care, support, resolution.

d) guess the meaning of the following words and word combinations without using the dictionary.
