Уважаемые студенты аграрных вузов!

Данное пособие предназначено для студентов всех факультетов аграрного вуза. Поэтому некоторая часть материала (в частности, тексты о факультетах) должны выбираться вами в зависимости от вашей будущей специальности.

Предложенные в пособии 12 тем общекультурного содержания можно разделить на 4 группы. Первую группу составляют темы, посвящённые личности самого рассказчика (например, «About myself). Вторая группа включает темы об окружающем мире (такие как «History of the Academy). Третья группа тем - страноведческих - предполагает составление таких рассказов, как «The influence of geographical position and climate on the British agriculture». Некоторые темы (например, «My hobby and free time») предполагают равнозначный анализ не одного, а 2-х аспектов. Вам не только следует рассматривать оба из них, но в будущем развить умение раскрытия любой темы.

Большинство уроков данного пособия содержат тексты и вопросы к ним. В каждом уроке приведены задания по указанным темам с лексикой для использования. Каждое задание предлагает образец его выполнения, представляющий собой пример использования необходимой грамматической конструкции.

Предлагая постепенно усложняющиеся задания, данное пособие научит вас построению словосочетаний и дальнейшему включению их в английские предложения. Оно создаст условия для овладения умением строить английские предложения с правильным порядком слов. Кроме того, вы научитесь 1) самостоятельно отбирать лексико-грамматический материал, требуемый по данной теме, 2) выстраивать структуру рассказа, 3) применять логические мыслительные операции в ходе разных видов анализа (в частности, сравнительного) на основе нескольких текстов.

Пособие соотносится с задачами профессионального и делового аспектов английского языка. Первый аспект выражен в формировании у вас умения применять профессионально-ориентированную лексику при рассмотрении общекультурных вопросов. Второй аспект, в частности, заключается в развитии таких умений как разработка и заполнение анкеты.

Lesson 1

My Hobby and Free Time

I. 1. Прочитайте и переведите текст:

HOBBIES

Hobbies differ like tastes. If you have chosen a hobby according to your character and taste you are lucky because your life becomes more interesting.

Hobbies are divided into four large classes: doing things, making things, collecting things, and learning things.

The most popular of all hobby groups is doing things. It includes a wide variety of activities, everything from gardening to traveling and from chess to volleyball.

Gardening is one of the oldest of man’s hobbies. It is a well-known fact that the English are very fond of gardening and growing flowers, especially roses.

Both grown-ups and children are fond of playing different computer games. This is a relatively new hobby but it is becoming more and more popular.

Making things includes drawing, painting, making sculpture, designing costumes, handicrafts.

Two of the most famous hobby painters were President Eisenhower and Sir Winston Churchill. Some hobbyists write music or play musical instruments. President Bill Clinton, for example, plays the saxophone.

Almost everyone collects something at some period in his life- stamps, coins, match-boxes, books, records, postcards, toys, watches. Some collections have no real value. Others become so large and so valuable that they are housed in museums and galleries. Many world-famous collections started in a small way with one or two items. People with a good deal of money often collect paintings, rare books and other art objects. Often such private collections are given to museums, libraries and public galleries so that others might take pleasure in seeing them.

No matter what kind of hobby a person has, he always has the opportunity of learning from it. By reading about the things he is interested in, he is adding to what he knows. Learning things can be the most exciting aspect of a hobby.

II. 1. Обдумайте смысл выражения time-off – свободное время. Сравните с сочетанием: to turn off – выключать (электрический прибор). Time-off означает: время, когда человек отключается от работы, учебы и т.д.

2. Составьте предложения о количестве свободного времени у разных людей, правильно раскрывая скобки.

Образцы:

1) Утверждение: I have a lot of (little) spare time.

2) Отрицание: He does not have much leisure time.

Для отбора достаточного объема нужной информации используйте следующие вспомогательные вопросы:

1) How long does it take you to: a) reach the university; b) (do? make?) homework? -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

В ответе на вопрос 4) используйте конструкцию both…and. Какие члены предложения она соединяет?

III. Составьте предложения в Present Simple, используя разные подлежащие-местоимения и соединяя пункты 1) и 2) по образцу: She bakes cakes in her free time. Употребляйте существительные-дополнения из пункта 2) в роли дополнений. При необходимости употребляйте существительные-дополнения во множественном числе.

1) to grow, to bake, to make, to play, to read, to watch, to visit, to collect, to do, to ride, to compose, to cook, to tell, to train;

2) a cake, a stamp, a bike, TV, a crossword, a book, a pot-plant, a photo, an art-gallery, a verse, a funny story, a pet.

IV. 1. 1) Рассмотрите примеры предложений, содержащих выражение to spend free time. Переведите их на русский язык, обращая особое внимание на глагол to spend в разных значениях.

Деятельность	They...spend their leisure time on reading popular newspapers.

2) Поставьте между подлежащим и сказуемым разные известные вам обстоятельства Present Simple: usually, always, often, sometimes, rarely, never.

2. Обдумайте смысл выражения: at my friend’s place – в гостях у друзей. Какое ключевое слово помогает понять смысл всего словосочетания в целом? Как это слово переводится на русский язык?
