12. Train the following cases of false assimilation. Try to pronounce distinctly sound combinations:

[sD] [sT] [zD] [zT]

cross the river misthought has this it was Thursday

pass the salt asthmatic has that she is thirsty

press the button house thieves was this he’s thirty

what’s the matter six thirty loose the battle it’s as thin as that

miss the bus it’s thundering as the saying goes he has thought so

what’s the use this theatre there’s the rub it was thundering

Special attention should be paid to pronunciation of combinations of interdental sounds [T] [D] and apical-alveolar [s] [z]. Let’s train these difficult combinations.

[Ts] [Tz] [Dz] [Ds]

deaths health zone mouths with school

moths south zoo clothes withstand

breaths North Zambia wreathes breathe slowly

months fourth zone with zest smooth slightly

south sea tenth zodiac sign with zebra with Sam

Pronounce distinctly combinations of [f] [v] and bilabial [w]. Avoid mutual assimilation in these combinations:

surf waves, safe way, rough water, rough wind, waterproof watch, tough weather;

native wood, collective wisdom, creative work, expensive war, relative weight.

13. Find the examples of true and false assimilation in the following words and word combinations written in transcription:

[Ll Dq] [faiv wJks] [rJd Dqm] [pin Douz] [put Dxt] [kwout] [rait TiN] [gets Dis] [kwJn] [qv 'wLtq] [rAf TLt]

14. Read in a loud voice the following combinations of words with consonant clusters. Mind different phonetic phenomena in them:

stop studying prefer bread listened to him

prepared a list wants some bottles just a student

insist on staying a secret entrance looked alike

builds barns step on a stone a hungry group

passes a spoon decrease gradually selects the facts

served breakfast changed the facts built a shelf Mr Smith is small received the letter wants the rings

Mr Smith smiles a cleark served wastes the envelopes
